Rome itinerary - 4 days

Hi, folks! Thanks for all of your help in my planning. I will have four full days in Rome. Here is what I've got planned so far:

Day 1 - morning - New Rome Free Tour (walking tour including Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon and several "lesser" sights; afternoon - ???
Day 2 - See ancient Rome (colliseum, forum, Palantine hill, circus maximus) plus Basilica di San Clemente al Leterano
Day 3 - morning - Vatican with The Roman Guy tour covering the Sistine Chapel, Vatican Museum and St. Peter's Basilica; afternoon - ???
Day 4???

I want to get to either the Borghese gallery (which is not far from my hotel) or the National Museum of Rome - would do one of these, not both, since this is the end of a one month Italy trip and we will have already been in a lot of museums in Milan, Florence and Venice. I also want to have time to relax with a cappuccino, do a little shopping, do some wandering.

What do you think of this plan? What would you add? What would you change? Can't change the Vatican - that's been booked.

What am I missing? What would you prioritize? Is Day 2 biting off too much for one day?

Have you considered Ostia Antica? Easy and inexpensive to there and is definitely a slower pace than the rest.

I just wanted to plug a gelato place - when you are going from the Colosseum to San Clemente, if you walk down via San Giovanni in Laterano, on the first block almost near the end of the block (just before via Ostillia) is a little hole in the wall gelato place called Gelateria da Constanza (you can see it on google street maps). We went in there twice - and would have gone in every night had we stopped in our first night instead of our third. We were staying at an airbnb on the corner. Delish - I especially enjoyed the amareno or amarena (black cherry) and the crema. Chocolate was good as well as the mint choc chip. So if you find yourself in need of a gelato (I mean - we ALWAYS need gelato) - pop on in there - prices are good as well (well, they were in 2014).

I have not heard of the "New Rome Free Tour"-is it really free? Is there tipping? If so, what is a suggested amount? I also have not heard of "the Roman Guy tour"- are these good? Have you taken them anywhere else?

So interesting! Love finding new ideas like this. Have a great time in Rome!

Yes, it is free - but tipping is encouraged. I have a friend who is a tour guide in Oslo, where the tours are free and his only pay is the tips. These tours in Rome have great reviews on TripAdvisor, and seem like a good introduction on the first day. The Roman Guy is a Rick Steves suggestion and has stellar reviews - you get into the Sistine Chapel an hour before the masses are allowed in. It is spendy, though! Also, great reviews on TripAdvisor and on this travel forum.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks! Keep 'em coming!
