Rome / Italy for Christmas and New Year's

My husband, my brother, my mom, and me are planning a holiday vacation this year to Italy. My mom is in her late 50's and it will be her first time out of the country. The rest of us are in our early thirties and are relatively experienced travelers. We arrive Dec. 22 and return home Jan. 3, flying in and out of Rome. A few questions:

1) Any suggestions about doing Christmas in Rome? Places to eat, things to do, places to stay, traditions to partake of, things we should know?

2) After the city experience of Rome, we're thinking of doing New Year's somewhere else less metropolitan. Maybe somewhere in Tuscany? We'd like to not be more than about 3 hours (by train) outside of Rome so we're not spending too much time traveling. Any suggestions? It doesn't have to be in Tuscany - we're pretty flexible.

3) Anything else in general we should be aware of when spending Christmas and New Year's in Italy?

Thank you!

Your question: 2) After the city experience of Rome, we're thinking of doing New Year's somewhere else less metropolitan. Maybe somewhere in Tuscany? We'd like to not be more than about 3 hours (by train) outside of Rome so we're not spending too much time traveling. Any suggestions? Answer: There are only a few Tuscany destinations that are easy to get to by train. Most of the Tuscany destinations people go to they reach by car. It's one of the few areas of Italy not well served by train. Answer: You'll want to have realistic expectations about the weather in Italy in late Dec/early January, go here, input your dates and locations and you'll get a summary of the last 10 years of weather data http://www.wunderground.com/tripplanner/index.asp

Oh, boy.... If I were going to Italy over Christmas (which I plan to do someday), I'd DEFINITELY try to get tickets to see the Pope deliver his midnight mass in Saint Peter's. I am not Catholic, nor am I very religious. But to be part of something so steeped in history in general would be fabulous!
We hung around inside St Peter's for a few hours, and waited for the mass so we could hear the singing inside the church. Hearing a full choir would be amazing!

I watched this year's Christmas Eve Midnight Mass on TV and was in tears for some reason. To be there in person.... wow.
I'm pretty sure RS has a link to check for tickets to Vatican/St Peter's-related events. also check out this site: http://www.stuardtclarkesrome.com/ They talk about how a lot of places are closed (like the metro) at Christmas.... haven't been there at that time of year, so I can't say from personal experience. Also check out www.roninrome.com.

Tickets to the midnight mass shouldn't be too hard to come by if you start planning now. Also you'll want to plan a lunch somewhere as just bout everything will be closed. There are some good links and addresses etc in this article http://tinyurl.com/bryf6o

Just a word to the wise Jess, if you're planning on going Xmas, get your hotel and papal mass reservations now. Get your flights as soon as reasonable prices show up.

Basically anything that you can book now, in advance without paying for it - grab it. You'll be glad you did later on. Rome can book up in a minute during that time, and you can always cancel if you need.

Sounds like a great trip! :) Chris
