Rome, Italy Airport Hotels

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a nights stay at a hotel near the airport for an early morning departure? I'm also understanding it may be just as well to stay more in the city center when comparing costs and just take a taxi to the airport.
I appreciate your input.

Here is Ron In Rome's very thorough analysis of the options: http://tinyurl.com/3jr3b8z

It will also help if you post more specifics. How early is your departure? From which terminal? And where is your flight going (to the US nonstop, or to another airport in Europe for a connection back to the US)? For many scenarios, as Ron In Rome outlines, a central Rome hotel works as well or better than an airport hotel.

I just recently stayed at the Rome Airport Hilton. I flew in one afternoon to Terminal 1, and flew out the next morning from Terminal 5. From T1 to the hotel was quite a long way (all through enclosed passageways, but my travel companion was miserable at the large distance). From the hotel to T5 there was a free shuttle van, which worked well. In other words, T1 was actually less convenient than T5.

From the the hotel to Rome there was a free shuttle every two hours, which worked for our getting into town for dinner. For our return from dinner, we didn't want to wait for the shuttle, so we took a cab for €48. (Side note: the driver wanted to use the meter saying it would be about the same as the legally required flat €48 rate, but I "knew this was a scam" and insisted on the flat fare. Guess what - the fare was indeed about €46. So, he got a few euro extra from my decision. However, this was at 10 PM on a Wednesday night. During the day, traffic would have made the metered fare much higher, so the flat fare is the way to go).

What is your flight time and schedule. It is easy to stay in the city if you don't have a 5.30 am flight.

Kathy, it's very easy to spend your last night in Rome and make your early flight. The Rome taxi business is quite used to this. Your hotel can easily make arrangements to have a taxi at the hotel anytime you wish in the early morning hours. The taxi fare, as of last fall, was 48Euro plus 1Euro per bag in the trunk to the airport. The fare is set by local law. Of course, you can stay at a hotel in Fiumicino. But, they know why you are there. The hotels there are nice and clean but nothing great - not even the Hilton at the airport according to Tripadvisor (#9 out of 21 hotels in Fiumicino). Have a great dinner and enjoy your last evening in Rome.

Kathy,

As Frank mentioned, whether to stay near the airport in Rome will depend on your flight time. Could you provide more specific information?

We've stayed in Rome our last night on previous trips and just asked the hotel front desk to arrange a taxi for us for early morning.. needing to be at the airport for an 8AM departure. The taxi was waiting for us outside the hotel when we left. I think this was about 5:30AM.

I know we've left from Florence city center for the airport about that same time as well.

Taxis work very well early morning, less traffic..

We just stayed by the airport in Rome at the Leonardo Da Vinci hotel. Rate was 110E for the night. The shuttle is FREE from the airport to the hotel, but 6E back. I also drops you off in front of the international terminal, so easy to get to your check in counter.

If you are thinking of taking a taxi to a hotel out by the airport to save time in the morning of departure....don't bother, just stay in Rome, enjoy a last night of the city and have your hotel arrange an early morning taxi...easy.

Even if you do have an early flight, as many of our tour travelers or west-coast residents often do, it's easy to reserve a day ahead for the early taxi. My only complaint about that is when I stayed out late and the taxi showed up earlier than requested. I believe that the airport is not staffed for check-in until about 5:00.
