Hello. We are planning our trip to Italy in April 2024 from the US and are wondering about car service options that might be available. I read somewhere that the taxi stand can be very busy and could take an hour to get one, and that a car service might be a good option. What are the best options - price and service?
Thank you for any help!
Never had to wait more than a couple of minutes at the airport in Rome, and I’ve used it many times. There are dozens of taxicabs all lined up. So either I was very lucky, or someone didn’t give you the right info. But of course there are plenty of private car services too, which can pick you up for maybe an extra 10 euro compared to the regular taxi (fixed taxi fare is €50)
We just did this today. I know we could taken the train, but we were exhausted and just took a taxi. Just follow the signs in the airport. We didn’t wait more than a minute, there were loads of taxis lined up. 50 € into Rome.
At home I often use Lyft. They don’t have it here from what I can tell, but there are some Uber signs at the airport. I was curious if that was cheaper, but to our hotel it was nearly 150€
Romecabs is popular, but IMO you are much better off in the queue, because the limos can't park close to there.
In September 2022, I took the Leonardo Express train from Rome Fiumicino airport to the city center. The trip took 30 minutes. A Leonardo train leaves every half-hour. There was no confusion: A ticket kiosk has instructions in English. The train terminated at Roma Termini, the main train station downtown. From there, visitors can take either a taxi or the Rome subway to their hotel. The subway is a snap to learn. Have questions? Go here: https://www.italiarail.com/leonardo-express-roma-termini
Depending on where you want to do it is either the train or a cab. The cab rate is fixed at 50E. We never encountered a line more than three or four people for the taxi. Most of the time we use the train since Termini is within a couple of blocks of our hotel.
You probably read about alleged long waits on the website of one of the private car services or some blogger who gets €€ by recommending them. The private car service websites may show up at the top of a Google search as sponsored advertisements. They will try to convince you they are a better, faster or safer was into Rome than the official flat rate cabs.
But I have noticed the locals always recommend the regular cabs. We like other people have not had to wait. Just make sure your hotel is within the Aurelian walls. Most of them are.
There have been many problems and many complaints about long lines for cabs at Termini this summer. On the 15th of August lots of tourists had to wait for hours also at FCO airport and all around Rome.
Anyway, this is 2023 and There is no reason to fear the same will happen in 2024. Even if you are going to arrive at FCO on April 25, it's not a big holyday like August 15.
We've used RomeCabs a number of times to and from the airport. Definitely a car service despite the name. After a long flight, getting little sleep, and being jet laged, there is nothing better than being met by a driver inside the terminal and being whisked to the hotel. We send an email outlining our needs and get an answer within 24 hours.
