Rome In The Beginning of July

Hey guys! I am planning to visit Rome in the beginning of July but Ive heard that its brutally hot and the tourist hordes just make it worse, however unfortunately thats the only time I can plan to visit Rome. Is it actually as bad as it seems or should I give it a go? Or would you recommend another place to visit rather than Rome because I have other european cities on my wish list as well? Please reply as Im leaving on the 18th. Thank you guys for your help!

Yes, what you've heard is correct: Rome is likely to be very hot in July.
Some people have to travel in the summer. If that's not you, then perhaps you'll go to the other European cities on your list, as you mentioned.
If you do decide to press on with Rome in July, make sure you get lodging with AC--AC is not universal over there.

i have a feeling that all cities will be as bad as the next. If you have your heart set on Rome, go for it. Get early staarts on your days, pick out either air conditioned places or shady parks, etc. for the mid day hours. There's a great website called Visitacity.com that can give you a great deal of information on planning a trip, with hours of opertion, et.

Yes Rome is really hot in July and there are a lot of tourists. Personally I really liked it because I like summer and I like crowded places so I can meet a lot of travelers along the way. But the queues at attractions can be really terrible. I am assuming it is your first time visiting Rome, so I would suggest giving it a go. The iconic places in Rome like the Colosseum, roman forum etc you definitely need to visit them at least once in your lifetime.

Actually I would really suggest sparing 2 days out of your travel time to visit Rome. It really a great city with a rich history. Another city that i highly recommend would be Bari in Italy. It is definitely an off the beaten path place to visit. It is a coastal city in the southeast of Italy. I only got the chance to visit it because my friend had a relative that was staying there. He brought us around and to visit Alberobello, where it is part of UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996. I would say this place is definitely difficult to find unless you know someone local who can bring you there. We drove for around 2 hours to reach the place but even the drive itself was super enjoyable since we got to see the scenery and when we were coming down from the mountain, we got to have a panoramic view of Bari. Breathtaking. If you are travelling there, I suggest contacting a local to bring you around as many of the places tourists can't find on their own.

Thank you so much for all your great responses! I think I should visit Rome because this is the only time of the year I can and I don't really want to end any European trip without visiting its grand capital: Rome. Any advice on where to stay in Rome and which hotel to choose? Thanks once again!

According to recent reports, everywhere in Europe is predicted to be busy this year, so you'll likely encounter the same conditions all over. If you want to see Rome this year, just try to make the best of it. Do some research in the guidebooks or wherever for hints on tickets or passes that will get you into sites a bit quicker.

Rome is great in the summer! Hot, yes; unbearable, no. I'm a heavy sweater and wasn't miserable. We walk everywhere our entire stay all throughout the city. I have stayed near termini and piazza navona. I absolutely love the latter and would recommend that neighborhood.

Happy travels!

I've stayed at residence zanardelli: http://www.residenzazanardelli.com/
And
imperium Navona Suites:

While we loved imperium, our bed was far too firm for our liking. Everything else here was great - affordable, off the beaten path, it really felt like we were living in Rome rather than staying in a large tourist hotel..I don't recall there being an elevator, we were second floor and used the stairs.

Kind of late to be looking for hotels but give Hotel Smeraldo a go - its within walking distance of the Pantheon, Victor Emanuel Monument, Piazza Navona and Campo di Fiori. A somewhat longer walk to the Colosseum and Forum. Don't know what prices are like in July - know that in September it was reasonable.

A lot of people recommend monasteries as a cheaper option and of course Youth Hostels. Hotels around Termini tend to be cheaper .

Rome is an amazing city - go if you can make it happen!

My family of 4 will be in Rome at the beginning of July and cannot wait! I have started checking the extended forecasts (yes - much too far out for accuracy but it's fun to check, anyway) and right now they are predicting cooler than average temps for early July - only in the 70s. We are coming from the Southern US so that will be chilly for us! Rome is an amazing city. I would also recommend staying somewhere near the Piazza Navona or Camp dei Fiori if you can find a place there. Wonderful area and easy to get everywhere.

As stated above, Roma will be probably crowded and hot. Keep in mind that Roma is an international city and always crowded. Also, because of the dollars strength against the euro, most of Europe could be more crowded than usual.

Since 2009 we always stay at the B&B Armonio All' Opera on Via Dei Viminale across the street from the Roma Opera House. The metro at Piazza Della Rupubblica is a 5 minute walk and Stazione Termini is a 10 minute walk in the other direction. The neighborhood is quiet and the b&b is really nice.

You could make an itinerary and buy tickets online for as many venues as possible. Starting early is a cogent strategy, but we are in our late 60's and a 10am start is early for us.

A favorite walk for me begins at the Trevi Fountain, then go on to the Piazza dellal Retonda, and then finishing at the Piazza Navona. We like this area both day and night. It's crowded and tourisy, but we like the area, nonetheless.

Go and have fun.

Buon viaggio,

Thank you so much guys for all the responses! I have finally made a decision for where to stay- Piazza Navona! Lately I've been reading Rick's guidebook and I have learnt a lot of tips on how to see all the sights in Rome without having to wait in the long lines. Thank you once again everyone!
