Rome in March

I am travelling to Rome with my husband and 2 sons (7 & 10) in late March for 9 days. I have not planned any excursions outside the city other than Ostia Antica so that we don't try to pack too much in. Am I making a mistake? Are there places that I should make it a point to see while we are there? I hope to get back to Italy someday, but don't think it will happen in the near future.

I think you are wise to not want to pack too much in but I think you could also venture out a little more and see some of the beautiful countryside. I have traveled to Italy with kids quite a few times so have some experience with this. If you have 9 days on the ground you might consider a couple of days in Orvieto. My kids really enjoyed it and also we went to nearby Civita di Bagnoregio. Orvieto is a beautiful town set up on a cliff. unfortunatly there is a very famous well that you can climb down that I did not know about at the time so we missed it. I had not done my homework. This is something I believe would appeal to your boys. We had a car and stumbled upon a little winery where the family was very welcoming and gave us a private tour of their place.I think 9 days in Rome might be a little much for kids. We always mix up city and country for our trips. Orvieto is close to Rome and I believe easily accessible by train. Google the places I mentioned and see what you think.

You are smart not to try to pack too much in. Your sons are young enough that you do not want to cram too much in each day. Have a few options for day trips if you need a break from the city: Ostia Antica, Orvieto, and the national park of Villa Gregoriana in Tivoli for hiking (http://www.villagregoriana.it).
