Rome in June

We will be going to Rome the last 2 weeks of June. Heared from 2 friends that it can be very , very hot. We 've been to Venice in July last 2004 and it was hot but cools down in the evening. Is it a lot worse in Rome as it is not surrounded by water?

Sally, your friends are right. I was there on June 23rd - June 26th in 2006 and it was VERY VERY hot. I was miserable, but had I been more prepared it may not have been so bad. Bring a hat with you and LOTS of water; maybe freeze it before you adventure out.

It gets very hot but as someone who has lived in hot areas before (and cold for that matter) I can say it's dry and not humid so that helps. Carry a water bottle and sunscreen and don't be wary of taking the public water. In my pictures from there when I went in July I look like a boiled lobster and my clothes were sticking to me due to the sweat.

I was there the 3rd week in June last year and it was really hot! I remember being at the Colosseo and it was in the low 90's. Be sure to dress for it, wear a hat and carry water. My hotel had a/c so I didn't care if it cooled down in the evening, but I seem to recall that it did.

You can check the FAQ (permanently listed as one of the first three topics on "To the Boot") for specific weather information based on the previous 10 years of data. A quick search for that two week date range shows this: The Average High Temperature is 85 F with a historical range of 69 F to 102 F The Average Low Temperature is 65 F with a historical range of 50 F to 84 F As for humidity, here's what they say: There is a 82% chance of a Humid Day (dew point over 60°F / 16°C). (154 days out of 188 in historical record) Most consecutive days found in historic record: 13 There is a 11% chance of a Sweltering Day (dew point over 70°F / 21°C).
(21 days out of 188 in historical record) Most consecutive days found in historic record: 4

Thanks everyone for your feedbacks. Thanks Michael for your detailed answer. It now concerns me that it might be too hot in June and that We have to prepare ourselves with hats, water and shades.

Keep in mind that there's nothing wrong with the water in Rome. I carried a plastic pint bottle and filled it at the small fountains when I needed to. I have digestive problems and I didn't get sick all. It's what they're meant for.

Oh, do it anyway! It's Rome, after all :) We were there the 3rd-4th weeks of June last year. It was plenty warm and we had a blast. Take lots of breaks and enjoy yourself, don't rush from site to site. We would typically head back to the hotel everyday and have a bit of a siesta to recoup our energy

And do "outside" activities in the morning when you have the chance: Colosseum, etc. Then head "inside" for the warmer afternoon hours: Vatican Museums, siesta, etc.

I'd also recommend clothes that dry easy (not cotton) and that don't stick to your back. Breezy and loose is nice. But really just balance the day and time your outdoor activities. We did the Forum on a hot day and were miserable. The next time we only had a short time so looked down from above at closing time and it was lovely.

I am not looking forward to the very hot weather but am looking forward to see Rome. Thanks for the reminder regarding clothes that air dry faster. I didn't think of that. As of now , I am still monitoring the air fare. An open Jaw from Sfo to Rome and Barcelona to Sfo cost over $ 1700. I tried other alternative route to get to Rome but it's not much cheaper. I will have to keep checking. Thanks.

I don't know if this helps at all, but my parents and I were in Rome last March and it was in the lows 60's. We are from Seattle where is rains all the time, so, non stop sunshine was hard for us since we are obese people. I drank the water out of the fountain on the right side of the trevi fountain.mmm so cold and delicious, and I have a very low immune system due to my meds. So in June, it will be scorching.

Sally - don't let the heat deter you, Rome is wonderful! Our strategy that we found successful: up VERY early in order to walk in the cool of the morning to places like St. Peter's, arriving before the crowds. Tour sites till 12 or 1, then sit down lunch (with wine). Back to the A/C hotel for a good couple of hours to rest, nap. Back out at 5 for more touring, dinner at 8, more wine, walk back in the cool of the night...you get the picture. We loved Rome - maybe it was all that wine?

Eat a lot of gelato to stay cool!
I was in Rome last year during the weeks you mentioned. When we arrived it was perfect, low 70s and even chilly when it rained. We left Rome to tour Florence and Cinque Terre. When we returned to Rome a week later it was hot but not terrible. Another traveler posted very good advice, get up and out early, find someplace indoors during mid day. You do not want to enter the Roman Forum at high noon and walk around the ruins on a very hot day, they look more dramatic late in the afternoon anyway. Lastly you must stay in a hotel with AC.
