Rome In July...Tours, Day Trips & Hotel

Hello, Family of 5 traveling to Rome for the 1st time and will be staying there for a week. I have read some posts on possible tour companies to look up and purchase advanced tour tickets through (Angel Tours, Presto Tours, Context Tours...) Here are my questions:
1. We are staying at the Hotel Mayfair (through our time share) - opinions on this hotel? 2. Should we plan an overnight trip to Venice? Milan? Florence? If so - any suggestions on where to stay? 3. Any non-touristy restaurants in the Rome/Spanish Square area that we should visit? 4. Any suggestions on days to avoid touring the vatican? Colloseum? Etc? Thanks!

In addition to the Rick Steves books on either Rome or Italy, you should check out www.roninrome.com for possibly the best website on visiting Rome.

1. The location is OK, little on the edge of the main sightseeing areas but you can use public transit. 2. If staying a week, the most I would consider is a day trip to Florence and part of day to Ostia Antica. OA is a convenient break from the heat of the city. And it will be hot in July. 3. There are no tourist free restaurants in the Spanish steps area. Ask at the hotel for local recommendations. There are a couple of nice restaurants between you and Termini. 4. Many sites are closed on Monday. If over a Sunday, see the Appian Way as traffic is limited on Sunday.
