Rome in January how warm is it really

Traveling to Rome next week. Saw the temperature during the day is 50-55 F. That is fairly warm but is that a humid warm or a dry warm. Trying to decide how much clothing to bring or wear. Shoes, I have really comfortable hiking boots and shoes. Torn between which to wear. One is much warmer than the other. Any help? Thanks

HI creesepv,
hope you are doing well.

Being from Rome I could say the weather is humid warm. Tevere river brings a lot of humidity especially in the morning so you could be cold even the temperature is high outside. My advice is wearing adding different layers so you can be comfortable in any time of the day. About shoes I believe you can just bring sneakers, they should be fine.

Hope I've helped you!.

Have a good day!
Simone

We visited Rome in late February last year, with low morning temps around 40-45 and daytime highs around 60. It felt warmer, so maybe the Tiber humidity thing is true. Yes, layers--a fleece with sleeves, a sleeveless fleece vest, a lightweight down jacket that can be compressed to softball-size, a stocking hat and gloves are all I needed.

I agree with Simone and Jay. Rome is a damp cold, can feel quite chilly. I wear several layers, a fleece layer is very nice to wear, warm and cozy. I wear a stocking cap I bought on the Adriatic. Neck scarves and gloves. I also wear leg warmers I bought on the Adriatic. I don't wear thick heavy pants so the leg warmers come in handy for me. I wear athletic shoes. I wish I had warm knee-high socks, that would help a lot on days I don't wear leg warmers.

You'll be surprised to see that people wear coats in Rome, warm hats, gloves, many wear boots. I'm not a boots person though so I never wear boots and so I can't advise on boots. I think good new socks would help. I wish I had a coat, maybe for next winter.

It’s San Francisco Bay Area cold. That means comfortable during the day, but kind of chilly at night and early mornings. Be ready to peel stuff off during the warm part of the day. When it is rainy it’s damp, but temperatures don’t drop as much at night.

The evenings will be cold and can dip below freezing if there's a cold front, more damp than dry. Nevertheless sweaters, light insulated jkts and scarves are a good idea. The dew point can dip also leaving moisture in the mornings, rain won't be as cold basically, hot-soup weather. San Francisco cold..that's a good analogy.

Day time, if the skies are clear, it can warm up to short-sleeves and denim. Just be prepared to shed layers.

When I visited in Dec-Jan, I wore a pair of Clark's desert boots and leather upland boots. The heavier soles are easier to walk the cobblestones and deal with the cold.

Speaking from experience, I would make sure that one pair of shoes is waterproof with good soles for wet cobblestones. January is normally the coldest month in Rome and can also be wet. It may not rain for days but when it does, your feet will thank you, especially if you plan on walking a lot.

Hi Sandra: you could order these; from a great company that donates a pair for every pair they sell.
They have knee highs.

I'm sure they would ship to Rome, or you could get someone from home to bring them for you.
I bought merino wool socks for my recent trip to Iceland, and they saved my toes!
