We are thinking of going to Rome in February 2010 and I would love to take a day trip to Pompeii while we are there. I know there is a train to Naples and then you transfer to a bus (or train?) to Pompeii, but because the site closes early in winter (I have heard both 3 and 5pm), I am afraid we would get there with very little time left to look around. Has anyone taken a tour bus or shuttle that does day trips from Rome to Pompeii in the winter?
And since I am asking, has anyone gone to Rome in winter? If yes, any regrets on the timing due to weather, early site closings, etc.?
I went to rome at the end of feb this year, and although it was a bit chilly at night, it was relatively nice during the day (mid-50s). Also, I didn't really have a problem with sites closing early and it was nice because none of the sites were too crowded!
Claudia, If the ruins close early in the winter, you might consider going to the town of Pompeii the night before & staying in a hotel there. We did this, train to Pompeii from Rome in the afternoon, checked in to Hotel Amleto & walked around the town. It's got a lovely town square in front of the Cathedral with shops & outdoor cafe seating. Next day we got up early walked to the ruins & spent the whole day there. It was nice not to be rushed. You could then train back to Rome that afternoon/evening whenever you want. The Hotel in Pompeii may be less than the one you would have paid in Rome.
My first trip years ago with my father was a bus daytrip from Rome. Left little time for the ruins it felt rushed, and they stopped at the cameo place for us to buy! No matter how you go, get the book "Pompeii" by Robert Harris. Older historical fiction, maybe in used bookstore. We understood what some buildings were used for and how they lived better because we had read this novel. Have a great trip!
