I have an opportunity to go and stay in Rome for free in August. Is the heat that unbearable as a few people have mentioned? I stayed in Florence in August and found it fine.

August used to be pretty unbearable in Rome, but to be honest in the last few years July has actually been much hotter. August is still hot, but can be cloudy, rain once in a while, and is really not bad. Certainly worth visiting if you have the chance.
Five more reasons to love August in Rome:)
yes it is quite hot but for free is a big draw. If you have a fam at least at night you should be fine.
Hi kath--
I'm here in Rome now for the month of August because I got a deal on an apartment (it wasn't free though). Yes, it's hot and sometimes a little humid, (I'm from CA where the climate is mild) but I'm glad I'm here. I don't have a/c but do have a fan. I plan my time so that I'm out early in the AM, long lunch, nap/break in the hottest part of the day, and back out at night when it's cooler. The city is very quiet compared to May, July or Sept (other times I've been here). I'm glad I'm here and would definitely do it again.
Thanks for all the great replies...I am going!
