Rome in a Day from a cruise stop

Hello, We only have 1 day in Rome coming in on Disney Cruise with our daughter. How, where and what would be the best way to do this? Within reasonable cost.

The most reasonable way to get into Rome from the Civitavecchia docks is on the train. Multiple train runs to and from Rome each day. Here's a sample morning train schedue. http://orario.trenitalia.com/b2c/nppPriceTravelSolutions.do?car=0&stazin=civitavecchia&stazout=rome&datag=07&datam=04&dataa=2011&timsh=08&stazin_r=Staz_DA&stazout_r=Staz_A&timsm=17&timsm_r=17&lang=en&nreq=5&channel=tcom&npag=1&lang_r=en&nreq_r=5&channel_r=tcom&npag_r=1&x=41&y=12 The "R" train does not require seat reservations. You just buy your ticket and get on. The IC train does require seat reservations but these are assigned when you buy the tickets. Also see www.roninrome.com who does a great job of explaining how to get to the train station from the boat docks.

The port is o/a a hour away on and inter-city plus train (each way). Lots of trains daily, fewer I believe on Sunday. Cheapest way into Rome. We were on a Celebrity Cruise and they wanted $90 per person to transport us from our Rome hotel to the dock. Train fares range from 2nd class, about $7 per person and o/a $11 for first class (not necessary really - it's a short trip). Take the shuttle from your ship to the port entrance. Walk out the gate and turn right. Keeping the water to your right walk o/a 3 blocks. Train station on left hand side of the street (the side . Easy to spot. I think there's even a U-tube video on it (Google the port for a link). Remember to get back to the ship on time as they will not wait for you when you tour independently.

A couple more suggestion from someone who has done that run Five times. If you are using the train You can buy an all day pass - 9E last year that covers all of Rome transportation including the train. Buy the pass from the Tobacco shop on the east end of the station. Second, if only using the train, buy an open second class ticket at any train station other than Civit,,,,, I have seen the line to buy tickets out the door especially when more than one cruise ship is docked. BE sure to validate your tickets !!! For a quick day in Rome go to Termini, walk out the front and slightly to your right across the plaza is the ticket booths for the various hop on/off. They are great for go over view and as transportation. When we are new to the city we will ride one loop and decided where we want to spend more time on the second loop. If you don't want to that, can ride a map well, and not too worried about getting lost, then take the train to St. Peter's station, (one or two stops prior to Termini where the train dead ends), and walk across Rome hitting most of the sights, and catch train back to Civit.. from Termini. Probably about 5 miles of walking.
