Rome in a Day (from Florence)

Is it possible to take a day trip to Rome from Florence? It seems that the fast trains can make that trip in about 1 1/2 hours, so if we take an early train to Rome, can we tour some museums and still take an evening train back to Florence?

A long day, but with careful planning, it should go well. Just know exactly where you are going and how to get there, so you don't waste time getting lost. Friends of mine did the opposite with 2 grandkids (11, 12 years old), no problem.
