I'm going to Tuscany at the beginning of July. The trip begins in Rome, I have two nights there, and really only one full day, and a couple of half days. I have been to Rome once before and saw St. Peters and the Vatican, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Borghese, the Spanish steps and the Trevi Fountain. I'm staying in Trastavere near the Pont Garibaldi and the Tiber. Given all of this information, what would you do in the limited time I have outlined? Besides eat of course.
The Ghetto area just over the river from Trastevere. Interesting ruins including the Teatro Marcello that was turned into apartments in the Renaissance and are still occupied. From the ruins it’s a shortish walk up the hill to the Capatoline Museum and the Vittorio Emmanuel Monument. You might also take the chance to visit Campo di Fiori, Piazza Navona and just hang out with a coffee.
Another idea is to take a food tour Eating Italy offer tours of both the Trastevere and Testaccio areas, fascinating blend of Roman history and its food culture and lots of tasty treats. I understand the offer evening tours of Trastevere.
Did you go to Trajan's Market near Trajan's Column?
The Catacombs are worth a visit, also the Appian Way.
Perhaps Ostia Antica? Totally different than Rome itself, and will only consume a half a day if you start early in the morning. Easy to get there on public transit. There is a place to eat there that is adequate, but nothing to write home about. Google it and see what you think.
Thanks so much for the great replies! I look forward to new explorations.
Food Tour! Eating Italy does good ones and some of them are in Trastavere
I'm in the pre-planning stage of a trip to Italy that includes 3 nights in Rome before we shift. This is our second trip to Rome, so I'm loving these suggestions, too, especially the food tour! (Who doesn't love a good food tour???)
