Hi =) My Fiance and I have decided to go to Italy for our honeymoon and we are going to be spending 2 1/2 days in Rome. We want to go and see as many places as time and our feet would allow us too. I kind of started a possible itinerary.
is this doable? anything that we are missing that we should add? or remove? the first full day is a sunday and well next is monday hehe
sunday: we would start at Piazza del Campidoglio , next Fori Imperiali, Colosseum, Arch of Constantine , Forum Romano , The Pantheon, Spanish Steps and end with dinner at Piazza Navona
monday: Piazza San Pietro, St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel, Castel Sant'Angelo Piazza del Popolo, and finish w dinner at Trastevere.
I tried to calculate how much time we would need in order to actually see and enjoy the places but I'm not to sure if its doable (neither one of us has ever been to italy before)
any tips, suggestions, comments...
Thanks!
You'll be running around but it is do-able.
For day 1, the campidoglio, forums (imperial and roman) colosseum and arch of constantine are all in the same area and flow into each other. You may want to start at the colosseum and work you want through the forums and to the campidoglio. From here go to the spanish steps, then go to the Pantheon, then the piazza navona. They are about a 5 minute walk from each other and makes more sense than going from the pantheon to the S.S then back past the pantheon to the P. navona.
On day 2- P. del popolo is out of the way. You may not want to do that then head to trastevere.
As for the amount of time, you'll spend the whole morning and the early afternoon at the colosseum area. It's large with lots to see. You'll spend 10 minutes at the spanish steps (nothing to write home about) and about an hour in the pantheon. Be aware that eating in the P. navona will be very expensive.
The vatican will take most of the day. Try to get entrance tickets to the museums early. You can go to the museums, sistine chapel, the basilica then the square. You can also book a two hour tour of the museums which is good and will show you the most popular rooms. After the square a 15 minute walk will get you to the castel sant angelo. Go to the top for wonderful views.
I think this is the most you can cram into 2 days.
Donna
Maria,
That sounds a lot like how we saw Rome for the first time. It's doable. But I suggest you get a good map of Rome, one that shows the sites, and then chart your routes. That way you won't be backtracking.
Enjoy and Happy Honeymoon!
Thanks for the suggestions!
I have another question we arrive on saturday around 2:30pm at Fiumicio.
This two itineraries are for sunday and monday.
What can we do on the day that we arrive, taking into consideration that between getting luggage and getting to hotel it probably will be around 5pm.
I was thinking maybe go to the Trevi Fountain and then go have dinner at the jewish ghetto (I've heard that food there is good and unique) but I'm not sure if we should use that time doing something different.
what do you guys suggest?
We are going in November. Around what time most restaurants close in Rome during this time?
I am also flying into Rome around the same time and was wondering if the Night Walk in Steve's book would be a good thing for this time frame. I am a little concerned with how much energy and Jet Lag we will have after the flight.
Does anyone have more advice or tips on the first day flying in?
Thank you!
The Night walk (or any kind of walk really) is a great choice for the day of arrival. Being out in the fresh air helps combat jet lag and you get a chance to enjoy your surroundings without going "OK now it's time to run over here and then run over there". We arrived midday, checked into the hotel and dropped our bags, then headed up to the Spanish Steps to do the Night Walk in reverse. We finished up near Piazza Navona, had a lovely dinner, and then walked back to the hotel.
We did Trevi Fountain on our first night and as long as you have enough mental capacity to deal with the often pushy street sellers, it can be a nice first evening activity. Italian restaurants tend to be open late year-round (we were there in November as well). They rarely open for dinner before 7 or 7:30 and we were usually there til 10 or later--and they were showing no sign of shutting down when we left. Quick-eat places and grocery stores seemed to generally close about 8.
Donna nailed it.
We just got back last week and did Rome in 2 1/2 days, pretty much like the itenerary you mentioned. Our first evening after check-in and showers, we walked to the Trevi fountain (10 minutes from where we stayed) hung out, walked around and had a late dinner (around 10 pm, which was totally typical of our time there)Next day was Colloseum-Forum-Pantheon (we stopped by St Peters in Chains church first, worth seeing Moses, 1/2 hour, then walked down the street to the COl.)By 5pm or so we walked from Pantheon to spanish steps, then to hotel(10 min from steps) short rest, showers, late dinner. Next day-Vatican/Sistene and St Peters in the afternoon (4 hours total)Morning we had late b-fast, P.del Popolo and church there (original Caravaggios) and Keats Shelly Museum near sp. steps before heading to Vatican on the metro. Its doable-just pace yourselves, stop to enjoy the gelato (or cappucino, or prosecco, or...) and have fun! Get the Roma pass!
