Rome In 1 1/2 Days

The tail-end of our two-week Italian trip includes a three-night stay in Rome to attend a relative's wedding. Since the bulk of our Rome stop is going to be spent attending the wedding, we estimate that we have at most a day and a-half to sightsee. I haven't been to Rome in 21 years - the Vatican Museum is a hazy blur seen from a teenager's eyes. I'm wondering how to best prioritize what to see and do. Any suggestions on how to approach a shotgun tour of Rome?

We also visited Rome in 1 and a half days, as thats all we could do at that time. We did the most out of it by visiting Vatican on the 1st day morning, and after some rest, did one of the night walks suggested in Rick Steve's Italy book. It was beautiful. In fact, I would say other than the must-see places in Rome, this was the best part. We were walking until 2am in the night, stopping at all piazzas, and eating gelatos and tartofus. The next day, we visited all the must-sees like Pantheon, Colosseum, etc.

This is my throughly unscientific advice (check the hours of operation and dress appropriately). St Peters, Vatican Museum, Colleseum, maybe the Forum. At night, the Spanish Steps, Hard Rock if you want--squeeze in Trevi fountain somewhere a long the way.

Rick in his books Italy or Rome summarizes on 2 pages his rating of the sights, you could focus on his "3 triangle" sights and do as well as you're going to do in a day and a half.

Kevin, I think you should play this by ear, ie how you feel after the wedding. You might prefer to take things slowly, and enjoy more, just a couple of special places, than tearing around like a hairy goat (as the old saying goes). Consider the weather factor also. The wedding is obviously going to be the highlight of your time in Rome, the other places/sites will still be there for another time... Enjoy. Pat
