My family will be visiting Rome this summer, and I am reconsidering our location for a hotel. We will be taking a day trip from the train station one of our days so I had thought staying near that area would be best but upon researching it seems that area may be less desirable. I have some other options that are not within walking distance (or at least close walking distance for an early am train); are cabs relatively easy to acquire? Wondering if I should just choose where we want to be and give up on ease of comment to the train station if it's not too difficult to get a cab.
If you’re staying in a hotel, they will get you a taxi.
I would not choose a hotel just for its location for one day trip.
There are taxi stands all over the city and Rome cabs are easy to identify because they are white and have an emblem on the door. They are required to take credit cards and fares are reasonable for short trips and 50 euros to the airport. Returning to Termini you will see taxis lined up in front of the station too.
A couple of clarifications. Taxis are ONLY available at taxi stands. You cannot flag a cab on the street like you can in the US. There are lots of taxi's stops all over Rome. If a hotel calls a cab for you the meter starts when the driver gets the call so the cab probably will show up with a couple of euro on the meter. It is NOT a scam. Have some cash. Taxi may be required to take c cards ---- BUT -- (wink, wink) the credit card machine may be broken. Before getting in, make sure the c card machine is working. I find it easier to just use cash. Puts you in total control.
We always stay in the Termini area for the convenience to transit. It is bit more commercial, busy, but has good restaurants and convenience. Hotel Sonya across from the Opera house is our usual choice. Great lattes.
