We will be in Rome 3 nights in July. I have booked our family of 3 into the Hotel Lancelot which is right at the Colosseum, and has parking for our rental in their courtyard. I have also booked the Hotel Pantheon for the same nights. It is right at the Pantheon--more expensive, no parking, have to park about a 15 minute walk away at Villa Borghese.
I need to cancel one and keep the other. Unless someone has a compelling reason, we will keep the Hotel Lancelot reservation.
Can anyone advise?
Luanne,
We stayed at Hotel Lancelot a few years ago on our first trip to Rome. I recommend it highly for friendly staff and good facility. Very good breakfast and nice enclosed patio for a drink in the evening. I happen to like the location. It is on a quiet street south of the Colosseum and not far from the Colosseum metro stop. I loved walking back by the Colosseum at night after dinner to see it lit.
On our next trip we stayed at a hotel that faced onto Piazza Rotunda. I watched people gazing at the Pantheon from our hotel room. It was not Hotel Pantheon, so I'm not familiar with that one.
The neighborhoods are entirely different. Lancelot being on a quiet street where locals live but close to restaurants and a market. Pantheon being very active at night with lots of tourists and people walking around. Depends on what you are looking for.
Whichever you decide, have a great time!
We stayed at the Albergo Abruzzi across from the Pantheon for the past three days and staying in that area put Rome on a human scale for us. It's a very pedestrian friendly, charming, touristy (in a good way that adds to the safe, cozy feeling) neighborhood and we just loved it. Walking into the Pantheon after breakfast with maybe 10 other people there was a wonderful experience. Later in the day the piazza fills up and there is always some type of entertainment, not to mention numerous cafes and gelaterias. We had a wonderful time in Rome and "our" neighborhood definitely added to our positive experience.
It would have been a completely different trip staying near the Colosseum, which is more of a big-city feeling area, where you're more aware of traffic and it's not very walkable.
So it does depend on what you want, but that was my recent experience.
HOTEL LANCELOT. :)
We stayed there for 2-3 nights in April 2006 and absolutely loved the place.
The staff is genuinely friendly and helpful.
The meals are outstanding.
The bed was very comfy.
It's within walking distance of the Colosseum, maybe 5-10 min. depending on traffic.
It was quiet except for the night there was an Irish couple hosting their wedding reception. We went down to get something (I can't remember what) and got invited to the reception! :)
Beware of city buses...hubby had his camera stolen on one. It was inside camera case, which was closed and across his bod, and under his jacket, which was zipped up. And the thief still got it. Bus was VERY crowded, we should not have even gotten on. Live and learn!
I hope you have a wonderful time!!
I stayed at Hotel Lancelot in March 2008 and i absolutely loved it. The staff was very helpful, they provided maps and directions to all the sites i wanted to see and the breakfast included with the price had a good selection of food. The hotel is in a quieter residential area that i felt safe walking through. I've never stayed at Hotel Pantheon so i can't compare the two.
