My father, 78, and his four children, ages 42-58, will be traveling to Rome and other points south in late September 2012, in part to visit his, and our, Italian roots. We plan about 6 nights in Rome, and will need three rooms, (1 female, two snoring males, and 2 males with no known sleep disturbances). I have convinced my dad to go with the Rick Steves philosophy, and not do tour busses and big hotels. Some place in an area with intimacy, a neighborhood feel, and some life at night, would be perfect. For you fellow Seattle-ites, this would be akin to staying in the Public Market area, or, for others, the Rue de Cler in Paris. Ideas? Preferably 140 Euros and under per room.
Hi Steven We went to Rome in October 08. Rented a private apartment which was more convenient than hotel room. You can research freereservation.com, homeaway.com, venere.com, airbandb.com, palazzo_olivia.com Just a few ideas: check what floor you are on, if there is elevator or how many stairs? cash only? we took enough euros from states to pay upon arrival at apt. didn't want the hassle looking for an ATM and getting or not getting cash. we paid deposit online then cash to owner. fridge, microwave, coffee pot was great. go to a store, deli and get a few things to have in apt when you wake up or to relax after a long day having fun.
enjoy your trip, don't stress out, and have fun
Hey, there, fellow Seattleite: I'd suggest either the Trastevere neighborhood or Campo de' Fiori. Here are some photos from our time in Trastevere in May 2008. There are lots of apartments to choose from through vrbo.com. I don't know about B&Bs in the area. Happy travels.
