Rome hotels

My husband and I are traveling to Rome and Florence this year and were hoping to stay in a "true" Italian hotel. We are concerned, though, as my husband is 6'6 and I am 5'10 and we wonder if most beds would be too small for us. Does that mean we would be wiser to stay in a chain totel (Westin, Hilton, Hyatt, etc.)? We would surely miss the experience of a privately owned hotel or inn, but it isn't worth a week of poor sleep. Any advice would be appreciated.

Paula, I'm not quite sure what to suggest, as I've never had to deal with the situation you described. I'm about 6' and have never had a problem with Hotel beds in Rome or anywhere else. One other thing you might give some thought to, is the size of the showers. Some European Hotels have the classic 3' x 3' shower which can be a bit "challenging" for many North Americans not used to such a small size. Most of these have removable shower wands so they're quite easy to use, despite the size. You might get some good information by having a look at Hotel websites, as they often have some good photos of the rooms and beds. That way you might get some idea on the size of the beds. Good luck and happy travels!

I have been traveling in Italy for over 30 years and just being there provides an experience for being in an Italian hotel. I agree with Ken about the size of the showers. Some are so tight that if you the soap it requires some difficult contortions to retrieve it. However, if you are looking for more of a personal touch you might consider a b&b, which is a relatively new option in Italia. We found a nice, new b&b called Armonio All' Opera on Via Viminale across the street from the Rome Opera House. We are going to stay there this August when we return. Check venere.com and tripadvisor.com for hotel choices. Both sites provide choices, pricing, map locations, client reviews. Buon viaggio,

My husband and I are staying at Rome Armony Suites for our vacation this upcoming fall. They are a bit bigger than typical rooms in Italy- you can check them out on Trip Advisor!

One option for handling the shower issue would be to book a room with a bathtub. We did find several showers pretty tight on our recent Paris-Sicily trip and we're both under 6 ft and of average size. The Paris hotels both had tubs and much more space for showering (just be careful getting in/out, as the tubs tend to be pretty high relative to American standards.)

I am about your husbands size and haven't had any issues but I try and avoid the chains completely in Italy. (I like the prices and the service from the little guy). The showers are for me the toughest part and I am in and out in 10 minutes so I don't give it much concern. Generally I find that after 16 hours on my feet taking in as much as I can of Italy, I could sleep on a chunk of marble. The chains do have an advantage though of you are more confident of what you will get in a room. Some of the private places have a bit more "personality" so if you go that route, check the reviews etc or post specific questions on this board. Lastly, you are not as likely to find as well sited places to stay with the chains, there is something rather magical about looking out your room in Florence at night and seeing the Duomo...

My husband is 6'6" too and he's never had an issue with beds in the 13 years we've been going to Italy. Stick with the Mom & Pop's...they're the BEST!

I have the same issue as your husband, and yes, I have had problems both in some of the beds and the showers (AND public toilets, AND doorways, AND all other height issues you might imagine - Europe was once run by very short people). Back in the 80's, it was really bad, and then they had the bright idea of putting those shower stall thingys in older hotel rooms and it was impossible to lather up in them. I had to step outside for that, soaking wet, then squeeze back in to rinse off. Suggestion regarding accommodations. Rent an apartment in Rome. We did this last time we were there and both the bed and the shower were for " normal" sized people.
