Rome Hotel Suggestions

My husband and I are taking our 17 year old daughter for our first trip to Italy in October. We are spending 3 days in Rome, 3 days in Cinque Terra at the Hotel Villa Steno, and then 3 days in Florence at the Hotel Silla. My friends helped me with these hotels however, they all stayed in condos or at a covenant in Rome. Any suggestions for us? We will not have a car. Would like to keep it under 230 Euros a night. Thank you for any suggestions!

October is right around the corner and a very popular month in Rome! I'd get on booking.com or venere.com and find something quick! My favorite hotels are already booked in October. I usually stay across from the Vatican at Hotel Alimandi Vaticano, and it's booked most of october! Look on Trip Advisor and read the reviews. I do NOT like the train station area, despite many opinions to the contrary here. Have a fun trip with your daughter! The Hotel Alimandi Vaticano has "family rooms" where you could all stay together, so check there but I think all their doubles and singles are booked. Rome is a big city and I'm sure you'll find something suitable, but get on it!

You can try the Albergo del Senato or the Hotel Smeraldo. Both are great. Donna

Apartments are plentiful as are B&Bs. Try VRBO.com and Cross-pollinate.com as well. You can easily beat the €230 budget. But I agree with the other posts: jump on it. Don't over think your ion at this point, but try to stay near Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, or Campo dei Fiori for the best walking access and great bus options. FWIW I live near a hotel that caters to tourists on package deals. It's a nice place, and reasonably priced, but it is a lloonnggg bus ride to Termini, where one then has to change busses to get to the historic center. Easily takes 40 minutes on a good day with good connections, to go to and from Centro Storico. It's not worth saving a few euros to have to spend 2 hours a day coming and going to your hotel! And a cab from the center to here is €15-20. Eats up the savings pretty fast. It's a great location to live, but we don't go to the Centro Storico every day.

We prefer the hotel Sonya but Aberdeen is equally nice and have used Contilla - all in the Termini area and convenient to public transit.

Tami, I haven't checked the prices for three people, but you could have a look at Hotel Sonya or Hotel Aberdeen, both located in the Termini area (I've stayed at both, most recently Sonya last year). I like that location as it's so convenient for transportation, and I find the area quite "vibrant". I'm not familiar with the Hotel you mentioned in Florence, but you made a great choice in Monterosso. That's an awesome Hotel and the owners are wonderful! It's actually very easy to get to (once you know the way), but you may want to spring for a Taxi from the station when you arrive with luggage. On my trip last year, I gave them a phone call about half an hour before arrival, and they had a Taxi waiting for me. Buon Viaggio!

Hotel Rosetta (right by the Colliseum) is a steal at around 94 Euros/night for a double in October.

Tami, I used booking.com and stayed at Hotel Genio, a half-block outside the north end of Piazza Navona. There is a 6th-floor terrace with wraparound views of Rome, breakfast is served there, and the terrace is open from 7am-11pm. The hotel is not expensive (4-star rating), about 95 euro for a single. Hotel staff is quick to accommodate guests. Bus transportation directly to and from Termini Station and many other popular desinations is a few steps from the hotel entrance.

The Albergo del Senato is a good suggestion. Would stay as close to Navonna and Pantheon as possible. The termini area is quite charmless and with your budget you should be able to find a nice hotel. We also liked Hotel Due Torri-quiet and a short walk to Pantheon area.

I did NOT like Hotel Aberdeen, or the neighborhood. Had to walk quite a distance to decent restaurants, etc., and the neighborhood near the train station just seems "shakey to me." I would follow the advice of the poster who recommends the Piazza Navonna area, but get on it!

And remember you can almost always take a look around the neighborhood by using Google Maps Streetview. That helped keep us from renting a room above a McDonalds once.

As the previous poster suggested, we used google maps to help us pick the neighborhood we wanted to stay in and found it very helpful.

Ok, most of the hotels you suggested were booked OR I did not care for the looks of the rooms. I have decided to go up in price. Any comments on the Hotel Artemide? I don't mind walking further.

Capo D'Africa was the best place we stayed. You can see collisium from rooftop bar. Great everything!

Tami One of the first suggestions was the hotel Smeraldo. Did you check them? They are a really nice place in a great location. If the hotel is full they have an annex just around the corner next to a wonderful deli type place. Good luck...

I generally don't recommend hotels in Italy anymore since our trip there was in 2007, but we stayed at the Hotel Oceania near Termini and loved it. I just checked TripAdvisor's reviews and it still gets pretty high marks (although some say it needs a bit of updating). http://www.hoteloceania.it/ho/Home_eng.html
