Rome - Hotel Smeraldo??? Recommended?

RS recommends this hotel, and the location looks pretty idea. My questions are:

  1. They do not offer non-smoking rooms--- has anyone stayed here and had unusually bad experiences as it relates to this?

  2. Cannot find how close the closest Metro station is, or what station that is? Trying to figure out how accesible teh hotel is to the parts of the city you cannot walk to.

Any other comments on the hotel are appreciated! Thank you!!

I haven't stayed there, but a co-worker stayed there earlier this year, so I just asked her what she thought of it, given your concerns.

She said it was "comfortable and well-priced for the location but stinky." And she smokes.

She said a metro stop was less than 10 minutes walk away to the east or northeast. She can't remember the name of the stop but says it was in a good area - very safe at night. On Tripadvisor, you sometimes can pull up an interactive map of a hotel's location showing nearby public transportation. I've used it for Rome and other Italian cities and it was helpful.

Hi Matt,

I'm a fan of Hotel Smeraldo mainly because of the ideal location and the nearby Campo de' Firoi market. I know that there are mixed reviews on "Trip Advisor" but I don't remember it being smoky and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. We walked everywhere from there--looking at a map it looks like it's probably closest to Barberini Metro Stop but it's quite a distance away.

Enjoy Rome!

I stayed here for 5 days. I don't remember it being stinky/smoky. I can't stand the smell of cig smoke so if it had been a problem, I am sure I would remember!
I enjoyed my stay and would stay there again. Good location, I walked everywhere for the most part. However, I do remember getting the bus near Largo Argentina a few times and that is just like a block away. Also, I had booked a single room but they "upgraded" me to a double without me even requesting it. Staff was polite but not overly friendly. All and all - I give it two thumbs up and would recommend it.

Count us in as fans of Hotel Smeraldo! We had 2 rooms, and the air conditioning worked great, no smokiness, the staff was friendly, the location was perfect, and we enjoyed the rooftop terrace. I cannot imagine a better stay, and I continue to be flummoxed by the negative Tripadvisor reviews.

Stayed at Hotel Smeraldo 3 nights in July 2006 and it was a great place to stay. The fantastic a/c was a godsend as it was incredibly hot. We did not experience any smoking smell at all. Our rooms were small but very nice. The fantastic a/c made up for the small rooms.

We also are fans of Smeraldo. We really like the Campo dei Fiori area and how walkable it is to everything. Never noticed any smell, and I am pretty sensitive to that.

We have never taken the metro in Rome, but we used the taxi stand at Largo Argentina--very short walk from Smeraldo--whenever we wanted to go someplace too far to walk.
