I would appreciate any comments from those who have stayed at the Hotel Santa Maria in the Trastevere section of Rome. Rick does recommend it.
I don't care for Trastevere in general. A much more central location is the Campe dei Fiori or Piazza Navona area in the historical center. Trastevere might be quaint and where all the locals live, but for tourists it's just an extra hike across the river to see the sights you came specifically to see. As for the hotel, have you read what these people said about it:

Is this your first time to Rome? If so, Trastevere might not be the best neighborhood. It's not as convenient to the major sites as Piazza Navona/Campo dei Fiori. That said, it's very popular and has a very active nightlife, especially in and around the piazza in front of the Santa Maria in Trastevere church. So active that you will want to make sure wherever you're staying has good soundproofing and/or take earplugs with you. (I saw on TripAdvisor that someone was complaining about the lack of soundproofing.)
Patrice,
I haven't stayed in that particular Hotel, so can't offer any first hand comments (I stayed at Casa san Guiseppe in Trastevere on my last visit, and would certainly recommend it).
I quite enjoyed the Trastevere area. Even though it's across the river and a bit farther from some sites, I didn't find it difficult to walk to the Campo dé Fiori, the Pantheon or other locations. The area becomes quite vibrant at night, with lots of sidewalk Cafés, Gelato shops, etc.
Happy travels!
We walked by that hotel several times, have not stayed there, but do stay in the Trastevere when we go to Rome. We prefer the area to be close to a good variety of restaurants and evening activity, and really notice no issue with getting to the sights.
