Rome Hotel recommendations

I first off want to thank people for giving me advice on previous posts. I have RS book for Italy and I'm finalizing our Rome lodging portion. From reading RS and previous posts the Pantheon is a great spot to stay in as it's close to lots of things and easy to walk.

Last time I was In Roma was 1987 and we stayed near the Spanish Steps but don't remember more than that.

Because I'm now always wondering if there's something better for less $ or what not I'd love to see if anyone has other options outside of the ones listed in RS book?. I like Arch Rome Suites and Hotel Smeraldo that RS talks about. I'd like to spend up $200 a night and both these two I just mentioned have rooms under that price. I'll go higher to $250 if its worth it. Thanks everyone. My friend and I will be there only Oct 6-9. Unfortunately we're really only in Roma for 2 full filed days. P.S. I just looked up Relais Teatro Argentina on Agoda like I did for the others and a twin room for two is on sale for $150. It doesn't look like it included breakfast though. Grazie a tutti 🤗❤

We stayed at the Hotel Regno on the Via Del Corso. It is situated between the Pantheon and the Spanish steps. There was a gelato place on the next corner which always had a long line out the door. We would stay there again if we travel back the room.

In past visits to Rome we’ve stayed in the Termini area. In 2020 we booked our stay at Hotel Due Torri near the Pantheon. We were looking for a quiet, central location & great reviews from this forum & Booking.com. We booked directly with the hotel. Unfortunately due to the lockdown we had to cancel. That said, when we return we will book at Due Torri again!

We stayed at Hotel Smeraldo on our last visit there in 2012. Believe it has undergone some renovation and/or expansion since then. We loved the location as it is pretty centrally located and an easy walk to the main sights.

We love the Trastevere area which is about a 20 minute walk to most of the major sites. It's got a great evening atmosphere. I can't vouch for it yet but the hotel we're eying for our next visit is Hotel Santa Maria. https://www.hotelsantamariatrastevere.it/ This line on the website is what intrigued us "All rooms of the Hotel Santa Maria are at ground level, built around a courtyard and portico, each illuminated by a window which looks out at the orange trees in the garden."

If you're open to a bed & breakfast, we just stayed at La Finestra sul Colosseo. We paid $450 (yes, USD) total for 5 nights, including city tax and breakfast. The room and bathroom were HUGE by European standards with a view of the Colosseum from the window--it's down the street though, so doesn't feel busy or touristy but was an 8 minute walk. Breakfast is served on a tray in your room and the hosts were very kind.

I've booked this B&B - B&B Casa Angelini - for 4 nights next May.
I like that its in an old building and the rooms are spacious with large windows and have a sitting area.

Check out Hotel Fontanella Borghese. You can walk to just about anywhere. We've stayed there several times and have always been pleased. It's very nice, but not over the top. In addition, the Hotel Du Tori was at one time was operated by the same nice folks and may still be run by them.

Lots of great suggestions here. We really enjoyed https://charmechic.com/. Large rooms, Netflix, large bathrooms, and wonderful breakfast on terrace. Just a couple of minutes away from Spanish Steps, and loads of shopping and restaurants right outside your door. They will even arrange transportation for you from the airport.

Grazie everyone for some great suggestion. I will look at them all. And yes it can be a B&B or anything in between. On this trip we're during some ArBnB, hotels and one Ensuit Youth Hostel in Milan by the central train station.

Another vote for Hotel Due Torri. We stayed there May 2019. Smallish hotel, very helpful and nice staff, safe on quiet short street, walking distance to everything.
For those who need an elevator, it is 2 steps up into a small hall. We just used the stairs up to our 1st floor room.

My friend and I stayed here in Sept. 2019.
We booked it on booking.com, but I linked it through here as booking.com has huge link sizes.
It's run by two lovely sisters in their 40's, they live in the building.
It's really a huge triple room, a small hallway, a good bathroom, and a kitchen; all for your own use.
No other guests, as there is just the one room.
It was sparkling clean, and so comfy.
They do supply basic prepacked breakfast items, but we bought our own food from a nearby supermarket.
You can walk there from Termini Station in about 8 minutes, and there is an elevator.
The sisters are so nice, and very helpful with true Italian hospitality.
You can see my review on booking.com about how one of them brought me an icepack for my sore knee.
I'm going to stay there again on my next visit to Rome.

Horsewoofie - I got an email last month or so from the owner of Hotel Due Torri (after my inquiry), letting me know that the hotel may not reopen until March next year, if at all, due to Covid. That may of course change.
I was hoping to book it for my trip next year after reading your review of it (trip report) but they were not taking any new reservations.

Nadine, that’s very sad about Hotel Due Torri. We really liked it, quaint and unpretentious. The building is a former bishops’ house. The breakfast lady would make my caffe con latte di soia e zucchero as soon as she saw us walk into the breakfast room. The marble steps are worn from centuries of feet. The foyer floor is filled with a large starburst multi-colored marble mosaic.
I don’t have plans to return to Rome anytime soon. But I hope the hotel survives.

Re: Hotel Due Torri- So sorry to hear about the current closure. Let’s hope they survive. They were so gracious when we had to cancel a year ago September. We were looking forward to our stay. Wonder if their sister hotel Fontanella Borghese is also closed.

That’s interesting about Due Torri
We had a reservation booked for late September
I believe I booked it sometime in June on booking.com
I ended up canceling because we decided to stay in Trastevere this trip

I hope they are able to hang on
Lovely place in a great location

Thanks everyone for great suggestions. A couple of the ones mentioned have no rooms available like Hotel Regno. The person who mentioned Hotel Smeraldo which is in RS book did you stay in the Annex portion or pay for a room with a balcony? My WIFI at the house has been down for 5 days in a funny comedy of errors so using my phone for research is not easy. Today we're getting supposedly Fiber Optics equipment. I'm all about saving $ but maybe having a balcony would be nice. A balcony room at this location is similar to rooms without balconies in other hotels.

Trastevere is the area you want to sleep I love that neighborhood. I stayed at Hotel Smeraldo once and liked that location too.

Another vote for Hotel Santa Maria in Trastevere! Easy walk along the Tiber to the Vatican.

I stayed at Hôtel Santa Maria in trastevere a few years back and also smeraldo
Pros and cons
Smeraldo easier walking, very central
Maria nice open courtyard to sit enjoying aperitif in evening
Absolutely loved both hotels.
Do not stay in Annex part of Smeraldo though.
I noticed Santa Maria has bars on windows now ( it is a cool area but can be a bit edgy if it’s ur first time to Rome)
Staff at both hotels were very nice

Thanks Brenda and everyone else, I think I looked at everything multiple times and even started looking near the Spanish Steps. Although Hotel Smeraldo was at the top of the list for a room with the balcony I ended up booking this place. https://www.agoda.com/argentina-style-view/hotel/rome-it.html The rooms look really lovely although its down an alley so can be hard to find the first time. The price for 3 nights was $400 USD with breakfast at sister hotel next door. Hotel Smeraldo was more and comparing rooms these looked better. This also had a better rating and the rooms looked brighter although now I'm second guessing my choice. Hotel Smeraldo is sold out now except for the annnex or family room. The great problem we/ I as a society have is there's so many hotel lodging options you just keep searching trying to find something cheaper and better. At least that was in my case.
