Thinking of staying at hotel 939 which is near the Pantheon. In the 2010 book Rick says that this is "exactly where you want to be for your early and late wandering." On google maps this does not seem to be all that close to a subway. Is it better to stay in this area (steps from the Pantheon) or near the main train line with easy acess to the subway. Both areas prices are all within our range. Thanks for any help.
Stay near the Pantheon, not the subway. Rome small and easy to walk to everything if you are in the center. Even if you have mobility issues the Pantheon is better because you will have to climb steps to in/out of the metro stations. The Spagna subway station is a maze of walkways before you reach Rome again, I hate this metro stop and avoid it whenever possible.
Pantheon for sure! Rome is not like London or Paris where the subway is like a lifeline. We were in Rome for 5 days in September and we never once used the subway. The subway doesn't go close to most of the tourist attractions. We took buses & taxis. The Pantheon area is a great area to stay in; very central to everything. Have a great trip!
Definitely stay near the Pantheon. This was our favorite area in Rome. We stayed near the Termini and never again. The area is graffitti ridden and VERY dirty.
Thanks all. We booked Hotel 939 from ricks 2010 book. e99 per night. The hotel is new to the book this year so we will post on here to let everone know how it is.

Near the Pantheon definitely!
And if you really want to get the subway, the Spanish Steps stop (Spagna) is not too far away.
From the Pantheon you can walk to the Colosseum, and nearly everywhere, to the most interesting areas.
Also from largo argentina (a square located 5 mins away from the Pantheon you have a lot of bus stops. )
The Pantheon area is full of restaurants , eateries, and at night it is a pleasant area to be.
I do not know where the other hotel is located, but trust the advice of a roman!
We stayed at a place just steps from the Pantheon (Al Pantheon Con Thomas Mann B&B). Sitting in the piazza looking at the Pantheon in the early morning, before all the tourists and as local business people prepare for their day, was a special time for me that I'll never forget. The Termini area could never come close. Easy walking distance to everything too. You're gonna love it.
