We are traveling to Italy in late fall and fly in and out of Rome. Any suggestions for a good hotel for 2 nights? We've been to Rome before and just want to wander and eat, not see any of the big sights, such as St Peters, Forum, etc. And since it's been awhile since we've flown to Rome, what is the best mode of transportation to get to and from FCO?
We have stayed at Hotel Fontanella Borghese many times and have always been pleased. While it is not "luxury", it is very nice and the location is great. The staff is very friendly and helpful. You can walk to Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Nuvona, even Vatican city. They also have a sister hotel closer to the Pantheon called Hotel Due Torri. We always send an email directly with our request for a booking and we get an answer back in 24 hours or less. Ask for a room overlooking the courtyard as rooms overlooking the side street can get noisy. The web site is www.fontanellaborghese.com. Check it out and see what you think.
Taxis to the main part of Rome are now a flat rate from the airport. Or you can use a private car service such as Rome Cabs. It's a car service despite the name. Only cost a little more than a regular taxi. We've used them many times and have always been pleased. It's worth the small amount over the cost a regular taxi to not have to wait in the taxi line -- not to mentioned fending off the privateer cabbies.

Happy travels.
What is your price range? I'm sure you could find some nice deals via TripAdvisor.
We enjoyed staying at the Hotel Nazional next to the parliament, a few blocks from Trevi Fountain.
Look at B&B's in Trastevere.
We (family of 4) stayed at the Panda Hotel near the Spanish Step several years ago. Not fancy, but all we needed. Loved the location.
If we were only staying two nights in Rome, we would stay in the Termini area -- Hotel Sonya, Aberdeen - for the convenience of the transit and the Leonard Express to and from the airport.
I also stay in the hotels near the main train station also - Termini
There are several nice - but not expensive hotels. Some mentioned above.
Sonya, Contila, Aberdeen etc.
I am a solo traveler and feel very safe walking this area at night and you can get
all over Rome with all the public transporation in the area.
Main Train Station, Major city Bus stop (next to the train station)
Happy Travels.
Since 2009 we've stayed at the outstanding B&B Armonio Al' Opera on Via Viminale. It is located directly across the street from the Roma Opera House and the neighborhood is very quiet. It's located about a 10 minute walk from Stazione Termini.
We've also used romashuttle.com for transportation to and from the airport and have been very satisfied with their service.
Buon viaggio,
