Could someone suggest a hostel or inexpensive hotel room for two - three people in a handy area to site see in Rome? We only need a place to sleep for we are not in our room that long. Keep traveling.
Charlene--I found my room on cross-pollinate.com. I stayed in the Rose di Bin guesthouse for 55euros a night. It was everything I needed. Located between the Termini and the Colisseum, it took only 10 minutes for me to walk to both, and as I've mentioned before I could look at that building everyday and not get sick of it. Metro & Bus stop just around the corner. Though, I only used public transportation when I went to the Vatican. I thought that the ability to walk to just about everything in Rome was the best the city had to offer.
I've heard great reviews on the Beehive in Rome, near the Termini Station. Clean, quite hostel beds for 22E, double rooms for around 80E. I hear they book up fast though, we plan to stay there next spring.
My husband and I stayed at the Beehive in October, 2007. It was very clean, helpful receptionists where someone is on call 24 hrs. They do not always stay at the desk but they are on site if you need them. Hopefully they have updated the outdated computer. Free use of it.
They have a small restaurant in the basement where you can have breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is two blocks from the termini and as the poster said the busses are outside the termini on the opposite side of where we left to go to the B&B. We walked everywhere. I don't remember the price but that was two years ago. Hopefully they are still resonable. It also depends on the time of year you will be there. ENJOY!!!
Romby.com - B&B called Best Comfort Residenza behind Campo Fiori, next to the river is reasonable, and a great location. You want to be close to dinner places for night, and there you can walk 2 little blocks to Campo Fiori, or across the river to the Trastevere area. Lots of good restaurants there.
Try a convent. We stayed at PICCOLE SUORE DELLA SACRA FAMIGLIA, Casa Di Accoglienza Paolo VI, across the street from the Vatican Museum entrance. Clean, cheap, and convenient. Other info on convents and monasterys is available at santasusanna.org
Allesandro Hostel Downtown worked well for us. Rooms are clean, linens provided. Showers are in hallway, some rooms have ensuite. Showers were by far the cleanest of any hostel I stayed in, and each shower is private with a locking door so you don't feel like you're in a dorm shower. Towel not included. It's very close to the train station so we jumped on the Metro to get everywhere. We liked the hostel. 1st Floor is the 'Mosaic' Hostel and its a little cheaper, no private rooms though, all dorms from 4-12 beds, very clean. We paid 25EURO's for dorm beds in a 6 bed mixed ensuite.
i strongly recommend "casa olmata"...about 3 blocks from the train station, was recommended in RS's italy book a yr. ago...double rooms were 40 euro or less...ask for Mirila, and tell her jim said hi. :]
Charlene, I'd highly recommend the Alessandro Palace Hostel, which is an easy 8 minute (or so) walk from Termini Station. There are two Alessandro Hostels (Downtown & Palace), but the Palace location has a few more facilites (Bar!). There's also a Net Cafe within the Hostel for guests.
I found the rooms to be very modern - electronic card access for each room, which also activates the electrics, ensuite in the rooms, professional cleaning staff, etc. As there are three of you, a four-bed Dorm would be perfect! If the fourth bed wasn't taken, you'd essentially have your own room.
Although I stayed in the Trastevere area when I was in Rome this spring, I find the area around Termini to be quite convenient as it's easy to access the Metro, Buses, etc. There are some nice restaurants around the Hostel, some of which provide a slight discount for Hostel guests.
Check their web site for current room prices and other information.
Buon Viaggio!
Finestra su Roma. Tell her you want a quiet room facing the back.
I have a B&B across the hall from my apartment in Trestevere - B&B Danilo. I think they are like 35-50 Euro per person per night. You can find them online.
I recommend the Beehive.
If you are pressed for time, they have a restaurant too that is very convenient and yummy to eat at.
Use www.cross-pollinate.com They are owned and operated by an american family living in Rome. They also own the Beehive. I have stayed at the Beehive (great hotel and art space and very inexpensive if you stay in the hostel part which is very, very nice). Have also used their apartments and bed and breakfasts and have had no problems. Good luck and have fun.
i stayed in casa olmatta and had a very nice time. it is NOT very modern, and you may share a bathroom with some other guest, but honeslty the price is right, and you're not in rome to sit in your hotel room. They have a free nice but simple breakfast. The bed's were comfy enough, and the location is convient to bank, and a grocery market, and about a 10 minute walk from the colliseum. some people have had bad experiences here, but mine was fine. the people running the place were pretty nice and spoke good english. I think i paid 30 euro a night for a private room. not bad for rome.
I stayed at the Rose B&B with two girlfriends. It was fine - clean, great location, close to a metro stop. There is a kitchen where you can do light cooking and they provide juice, coffee and rolls. You can walk to nice cafes and the ancient sites.
Ask for more than one key.
