Rome half-day tours to Appian Way/Catacombs?

Hello,

Does anyone know if there are any half-day guided tours from Rome out to the Appian Way and the Catacombs, which would depart in the afternoon? I'd rather not do a bike/Segway/Vepsa tour, if possible, as I want to take a lot of pictures.

Most tours I see all depart in the morning, but I'll only have time to do this in the afternoon.

Any ideas?

Might just have to do this on my own, but would rather see the Catacombs with a tour guide's insight.

I'm doing the Heart of Italy tour, and training from Florence to Rome at the end of the tour, so I can fly round-trip from Rome--I wanted to see a few more sights before heading back home, and the Appian Way is at the top of my list.

Thanks either way.

Mark, you can't visit any of the catacombs on the Appia independently. Ticket prices include a guided tour in a choice of languages, and photography isn't allowed. Here's the info on S.Sebastiano, S. Callixtus and S. Domitilla:

We did S. Sebastiano, and explored the Appia Antica on foot on our own. Wish I had a suggestion for an Appian tour but hopefully someone else has an idea. We spent an entire day exploring the"Queen of Roads" and it was our favorite day in Rome to date.

Mark,

I came across this (https://www.contexttravel.com/cities/rome/tours/catacombs-excursion) as I was doing the research for touring catcombs and the Appian Way. It looks really good. Pricey though. Another tour guide that I read a lot of good things about is Agnes Crawford at understandingrome.com. She has a half day roadway and aqueduct tour (http://www.understandingrome.com/ancient-rome-tours/appian-way-caracalla-tour/) that might work for you.

Good luck!

4 years ago we did the Appian Way on our own and followed R.S. book tour. Took a taxi from Largo Argentina to the tomb of Cecilia Metella. Taxi was 15 Euro incl tip. Visited the Catacombs of San Sebastiano as the Catacombs of Callisto closed for several hrs. in the afternoon and San S. didn't. As a previous poster stated, you must take a tour and understandably no pictures were allowed. We took the bus back. Details are in the R.S. Rome book.

Thank you for the info. I just got the Italy and Rome guidebooks for 2018, and will start scouring them. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, and the extra info. That helps a lot. I appreciate it.

So you have some ideas to work with! My comment on the City Wonders tour is that it doesn't include a trek on the Appia. While I was glad we did S.Sebastiano, it was exploring the many relics along the road (we started farther out than Cecilia Metella) that was the goal and highlight for us. You may have different priorities, however, so go with whatever works best.

We planned our day to end up at the Baths of Caracalla, San Giovanni in Laterano, Santa Stefano Rotundo and San Clemente. While you wouldn't be able to fit all of this + the Appia and Catacombs into the time you have, you might be able to slip San Clemente in: last entrance to the excavations is 17:30.

Thanks, Sandra and Kathy. This is really helpful. I think I'll do the Appian Way on my own, and do the guided tour for San Sebastian. That seems to make the most sense for what I'm looking to do. Thanks Kathy for both of your comments--to hear that the Appian Way was a highlight of your tour is important to me; I want to see that whole area, and glad its worth the time. I really appreciate your help. Happy travels!
