Any suggestions on where to go and time frame involved in renting a bike, finding the via appia and riding to one of the reccommended Catacomb tours? we are staying at a Seminary close to Vatican.

Have you tried asking the place you'll be staying? They would know better than anyone else, I would think.

It's peaceful, serene and beautiful along via Appia...but if you ride a bike be prepared for bumpety-bumpety-bumpety over the stone road.
