Going in September can anyone recommend a good tour company for tickets to the colosseum, and vatican museum. We would also be interested in a golf cart tour. A self guided tour of the above would be the best for us.
You won't learn near as much on a self guided tour. The Vatican is OVERWHELMING AND HUGE. You will have no idea what you are looking at and what to focus on and what not to miss. You really need a guide. You can do group tours or hire private guides which are our preference. Get your tickets from the direct sites, not 3rd party sites. If you hire a guide, they will help you with this. If you are going this September, it may be too late to get tickets as they open up 60 days before your date.
Walks of Italy is a well known highly rated tour company
Might be your only option to get tix to those top venues at this late date
Golf cart tours have been mentioned here recently
A forum search should bring up those posts
Good luck!
Tickets for the Colosseum (tours and self-guided; official website):

But as mentioned above, tickets may be sold out for your dates so you may need to book with a good independent company, such as the one Christine has recommended, although most tours will not be self-guided.
We've done 3 with Through Eternity over the years and have been impressed by all of them. The guides have always brought the sites to life, especially the Forum and Palatine Hill where I would have been looking at piles of rubble without a tour.
RS audio tours are very good
