Rome: Getting through Customs/Immigration and to Termini Station; How long will it take?

This will be our first time in Italy. We land in Rome, but are going directly to Pisa to start the first week of our trip. I would like to book my train tickets ahead of time from Rome Termini to Pisa, but I am not sure how long I should plan once we land at FCO, to get through the airport terminal, then to take the 30 minute fast train from the airport to Termini. How much TOTAL time should we give ourselves once we land at FCO, to actually get to Termini?

Also, our flight from the US goes from Chicago O'Hare, through Munich Germany, and then on to Rome. Where do we go through Customs/Immigration (Chicago, Munich, Rome?) Our layover in Munich booked through the Lufthansa website is only 1 hour 15 minutes, and I am wondering if I should be concerned.

Well, the good news is you will go through immigration in Munich, so in Rome you just walk through the terminal and out the door, assuming you have no checked bags.

1 Hr 15 Minutes in Munich? probably should be OK, you will want to look for any directions to connecting flights or in transit, so you stay in the secure zone.

For Rome, it seems like a long walk from your gate to the train station at the airport, 30 minutes should be safe. The Leonardo Express leaves every 15 minutes or so, and takes a bit over 30 minutes, plus maybe another safe 30 minutes to find your train.

So...one and a half hours minimum to two hours is "typical". With checked bags, that's a wild card, missing a departure, getting a bit lost, delays of your flight...who knows.

Some might leave 3 hours, maybe 4. You can also look at flexible tickets that allow you to reschedule. Some might just plan on sitting and having a nice lunch at termini if things go well.

Welcome to Italy! You will go through PPC i n Munich, and then(if you checked bags) pick them up at FCO; that's where things get "interesting." You are now dealing with "Italian time," which means, if you land during lunch(12 to 2) you can wait at baggage claim number 3 until lunch is over.
Suggest you just take a deep breath, and get used to the pace of Italian life, and go with the flow. It could be a couple of hours to get to Termini, or more.
As far as the connection in Munich, no worries-you're in Germany-Italian time has a different clock.
