We are staying at Hotel Grifo close to the center of of historic old town. Looking for opinions on getting from the airport to that area. What is the cheapest, easiest, fastest etc......
Taxi. Fixed 48 Euros.
Train to Termini and the taxi to hotel. Or, if you feel brave and have a good map, train to Termini and metro to Cavour then walk the few blocks to hotel.
cheapest, easiest, fastest does not have the same meeting
Cheapest will be the bus at 8E to Termini and then either public transit or taxi
Fastest (depending on time of day) and easiest is probably the taxi at 48E fixed for up to four people.
Fastest could also be the Leonard Express at 14E/person to Termini and then a taxi.
Plus 1 euro per bag.
While public transport would be the cheapest, it won't necessarily be the fastest! I've used RomeCabs.com twice for transfers to/from FCO & I highly recommend them. They are extremely reliable and the drivers are courteous & helpful. They use comfortable, clean and air conditioned cars. They charge the same amount as a taxi but it's a much easier and nicer experience. You book ahead on their web-site & you don't pay until you're there. Our first experience with them was in '09 & our flight arrived at FCO 5 hours late from NYC. I was worried that our driver would not be there when we arrived and/or would not know that our flight was significantly late. To my surprise, when we exited the baggage claim area, our driver was standing there holding a sign with our name on it and he had monitored our flight and knew it would be late. He was extremely nice and helped us with our bags and drove us in a nice Mercedes to our hotel in Rome. I personally would use Romecabs rather than schlep luggage onto/off of public transportation. My last experience with them was this past September when we needed a transfer from our hotel in the city center to FCO at 4am. Our driver was early and waiting for us in our hotel lobby and he helped us with our luggage. Three days earlier, we took a taxi from the train station to our hotel and the driver tried to charge us extra for helping us with our bags! You will likely be tired when you arrive in Rome and using a cab is much faster and easier.
The cheapest is a Terravision bus to the Termini station (I think it's €8 per person, which takes up to 50 min. Then from the station walk to the hotel (about 15 min walk). If you take a taxi from the station it's probably 7 or 8 min, the cost likely under €10.
The most comfortable and certainly faster is a taxi all the way from the airport at €48 for up to 5 people (about 40 min) from airport to hotel.
The Leonardo Express train is another option. It costs €14 pp (32 min.). Then from the termini station it's the same 15 min walk or the short taxi ride.
