Would you suggest the BIRG ticket? Is this really a round trip ticket that includes all public transportation while in Rome for the day? Would we have to pick return time when we purchase the ticket? I was told I could buy tickets out of the machines on the way to the train station rather then stand in line?

Sure, the BIRG ticket. It was 9E last year, probably a little more this year. It is a one day ticket. Don't have specific return time. Open seating. There are three or four trains an hour between Termini and Civit... Basically a commuter run. Have no idea what you are referring to ..... machines on the way to the train station ..... the ticket machines are in the train station if that is what you mean. Second, if cruise ships in town the lines will be long for the ticket window and ticket machines. There are only a couple machines at the station. Buy you ticket from the tobacco shop on the other side of the station. Fee people know that.
