Rome for New Years

I am going to be in Rome for New Years Eve. It seems like most restaurants have a price fixe menu (on the higher end). Does anyone have any recommendations for either a really good price fixe or ala carte? I would prefer something more middle of the road if possible and I would like to make an advance reservation.

I understand there is a big party in the Piazza del Popolo around midnight. Are you able to bring alcohol to the Piazza del Popolo and drink outdoors? Is there any food sold in the Piazza?

Any ideas or recommendations are welcome! Thanks!!

You can drink alcohol in the streets in Italy and there will be plenty of people with bottles of champagne in the piazza del Popolo. I've been to some of those events in the streets and they tend to get too crowded and rowdy for my taste. Too many young drunk people and way too many broken glasses on the ground. Maybe things got under control more recently.

A complication New Year's Eve is that public transportation shuts down at 21:00, so be prepared to hoof it. Cabs are out, but heavily patronized. Piazza del Popolo is still a mob scene with fireworks going off in the crowd. The city is quite insane NYE.

As to dining, we were shocked last year at how dressed up people get for NYE dinner, even at a middle-of-the-road place. Last year we went to a place we would normally consider moderate and maybe pay €80 for two with wine, but is was 30% higher on NYE. Ask your hotel/B&B for a recommendation in the area, and absolutely make a res.
