My two daughters are in Madrid for 10 days and are considering a three night trip to Rome March 30-Apr 2 (Good Friday). Is this crazy? Are the crowds a problem?

I did it last year and there were crowds but it was not that bad. We were able to go to one of the services at St Peters (get reservations in advance) which even though I am not Catholic was a very inspirational time.
