Rome for family of 5

Hello, I've been pouring over posts to get a feel for where to stay in Rome. From what I've read, it seems like Piazza Navona area gets many good reviews. I've also been reading that you have to be careful when renting an apartment in Rome. I've checked out Ron in Rome (as per suggestions), and he offers some excellent tips. I'd love some actual apartment recommendations. We are going in May and will be in Rome for 4 days (I wish it could be more, but we are traveling up the coast to Florence and the Cinque Terre too and don't want to short-change those areas). We are a family of 5: kids ages 9, 13, 16. We are looking for a place where we can walk to the sights. I've read Rick Steves' Italy and Rome, but many of the places he suggest to stay are hotels. I'd love some advice! I'd also be interested in suggestions for places in Florence and the Cinque Terre. I'll keep reading past posts too! Thanks!

Becky, I usually stay in Hotels or Hostels in the Termini area of Rome, so can't offer any suggestions for apartments in the Piazza Navona area. I'm sure someone in the group here will be able to help with that. Regarding your stay in the Cinque Terre, have you decided which of the five towns you might prefer to stay? I tend to prefer Monterosso, as it's the largest of the five and has the best beach and the greatest number of hotels, restaurants and other tourist facilities. I'm not sure how many "apartments" there are in the C.T., so you may have to stay in a Hotel. I'd highly recommend booking accommodations EARLY in the Cinque Terre! Good luck with your planning!

Hi, Becky, We stayed at Albergo Del Senato when we took our three kids there (14, 13, 11) there two years ago. It faced the Pantheon, had a great rooftop deck and we walked everywhere in Rome. Very nice breakfast at the hotel and we could walk to a few small, family restaurants. Each night the piazza in front of the hotel became a gathering place and my kids were get an ice cream and sit around the fountain in front of the hotel. Also, it had AC which was key - we were there in August and it was plenty hot! It's No. 2 on TripAdvisor. Hi Becky, You sent me a private message about where to stay in Rome. I'm on vacation now and don't have my Italy info. I'll ask my daughter to send info about our Rome apartment. We stayed in Campo de Fiori. We had 2 bedrooms and 2 baths in a 1 story walk up apartment. It was a very good location, we walked everywhere. The apartment was clean but not fancy. Good restaurants/carryouts very close and a huge market is set up everyday in the campo. The last day of our stay we went to Travasere(sp?)area. I think that would be a good area to look for an apartment also. A local told us it is a less expensive area. We had a very delicious lunch there and the area was really a fun place. We also stayed in Montorosso in Cinque Terre. The town was interesting and Montorosso has a large "beach". Good places to eat there and an adequate grocery store. We rented a home very close to the beach. Ciao, Peggy

Dear Becky If you are traveling with kids, I definitely suggest you to stay in location close to the major attractions. The area of Termini, train station, can be not too safe in the evening, I rather suggest you the area of the Pantheon, Navona square, Popolo Square, Flaminio square and Risorgimento square (the last one is not too far from the Vatican city) If you search on google you can find many owners that have apartments to rent for short periods. Rome is a safe city Florence is much smaller than Rome, when you book an apartment book something near Santa Croce square or the area of Oltrarno or Ponte Vecchio (old bridge), same like for Rome you can easily find some good apartments in google 5 Terre are very small villages you can reach them from Tuscany by train or by car but once there you won't need a car It is more easier to find little hotels or BB than apartment even though you might find something available on google if you do a little search Kind Regards Viviana
