Rome for an afternoon?

Help! I don't know Rome well enough to figure this out.

In a few weeks, we'll be traveling via train from Florence to Rome, then by air from Rome to Dubrovnik.
We are spending Sunday night in Florence. We leave Roma (FCO) Tuesday 7 am (ouch).

My husband has never been to Roma, so it seems a shame to miss out on Rome entirely, but I just don't know how to pull it off-- which train stations to go in and out of, where to stay in Roma-- city or airport--, what to do with our bags while we explore Roma, how cumbersome traffic is, etc.

Thanks for any suggestions and advice!!

Most likely you will be going by train from Firenze Santa Maria Novella to Roma Termini. Staying in the Termini area will be very convenient, plus it'll be easy to take the Leonardo express train from Termini to FCO, or there should be plenty of cabs in the area (cab fare from Rome to FCO is 48 euros by law).

From Termini you can hop on the metro to get to any sight seeing you want. Unfortunately you are there on a Monday, so some sights are closed. BUT that also helps to narrow down your choices! Rome has a lot of great things to see. If you let us know what you are interested in, we can help you decide what to see. Art? Architecture? Ancient or renaissance?

Just one correction to Angela's otherwise spot-on post: the Rome Metro only goes to a few places of interest to visitors. But, in front of Roma Termini Station is a huge bus plaza, and buses will go from there to anywhere in the city.

As she says, if you give us an idea of what you want to see, we can give suggestions. Or you can look at Rick's list of highlights, here (click the "at A Glance" tab): http://www.ricksteves.com/europe/italy/rome
