Rome for 4 Days

Taking my daughter to Rome then Croatia. It's her 1st time in Rome. This is my current Itinerary. We prefer walking around to museums.
Arrive Monday: Shopping, Walking around
Tuesday: Private Vatican Tour in morning. Afternoon free to sight see.
Wednesday: Colosseum and Forum private tour (Husband and I loved this and it's history)
Thursday: 9:30-2:30 market and cooking lesson
Friday: Leave for Croatia.

question, is Vatican a MUST DO? My husband and I have been. Or would you do a Jewish Grotto tour? I've heard areas of the Vatican may be closed. I'm on the fence with this but also feel like YOU HAVE TO DO Vatican if there.

thank

Do you mean the Vatican museums or St. Peters, or both?
With such a limited time in Rome, I'd skip the cooking lesson. I'm sure it's fun but do you really think you will learn things that you will apply to your home kitchen? At least I'd want to know which dishes they are going to teach you....no sense in spending an hour making pasta if you are not going to do that at home..

And I'd go to the market alone...do you know which one you want to visit?? Testaccio? What exactly d you want to do at a food market--snack? Learn about seasonal produce? (I'm not being sarcastic--I LOVE visiting markets--but do you really need a guide for that? I just wander around myself, ask a couple of questions if I want to learn something....always buy one or two items if a vendor takes the time to chat with me. Some markets have great, great stands where you can have lunch or snacks....like the one in Testaccio. There's also that huge market near the Vatican..Mercato Trionfale; I think it's the largest in Italy. It's not been packed with tourists when I have gone there.

Remember to go to food markets in the morning, or before lunch.

What kind of shopping will you plan to do?

Thank you. We love cooking. We did this in Europe last time. We are more a hands on family vs. Museum. I was going to book a private Vatican, Sistine Chapel tour.

The Jewish Ghetto is just 7 1/2 acres. Download Rick Steves’ audio guide and you can easily do it in your free time.

Nothing is a must do. What does your daughter think? How old is she? On my first trip, I visited and enjoyed St. Peters, but my sister was denied entry because her dress was above her knees. I don’t think she has ever been back to see it. Oh, well, it has only been 55 years.

Right, nothing is essential. If you don't love museums, why go to the Vatican Museum?

I'm a pretty good home cook, but I've never taken a cooking class outside my own city..I'd certainly want to know what dishes I was going to cook if I did take a cooking lesson...but that's just me....I'd not be interested in baking a cake, for example. Or making pasta. I can buy such great pasta--fresh and dried--at home, I don't get the attraction of making my own, but I know lots of people get joy out of doing just that...

If you love food, have you planned lunches and dinners yet?

We went to the Vatican simply because it was one of those must-see places. Neither of us had any interest in art and still don't. However thanks to the guide who brought the art to life by not talking about the art, but the history of religion I enjoyed the Vatican more than our Colosseum/Forum tour. Must-see is subjective and for me it was the quality of the guide that made all the difference.

There is so much more to see, for example:
Capitoline Hill Museum
Nero's Palace
Trajan's Markets
The Pantheon
Castel St. Angelo (Hadrian's Mausoleum)
And there is more, skip the cooking lesson.
