My wife and I are thinking of spending next summer in Rome. We want to be near the city center as well as public transportation. We like to do a lot of walking. We also expect to have visitors and need a 2 br, 2 bath a comodation -- a hotel will not work in our case. Any particular areas of Rome best suited to this type of stay? Neither of us speak Italian.
No suggestions, but take care that your contract permits other guests.
Centro Storico (historical center) is probably most central, albeit some areas are really busy with lots of tourists.
Trastevere is also nice, near Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere.
Prati (near Vatican) is more residential and less crowded with tourists but well served by the metro.
I used to stay near the Termini station sometimes before flying home the next day, but now my family there told me the area is gone down a lot and at night is not recommendable. I usually stay in Trastevere (closer to family members).
Agreed that a shade-laden lane in Trastevere would do the trick for you. Or...
...as I've said in another thread, this past March we spent a week at an apartment overlooking the Campo de' Fiori market. That time of year, you had maybe 4-5 hours a day of locals & tourists alike and their bustling daily trading with the vendors. Plenty of room for everyone, and from late afternoon on we could have our windows open wide without much noise at all. But...no way would I rent this apartment in the summer, when Campo is a social gathering spot with crowds from morning until the wee hours. That would get old real quick, I would imagine.
However, it's a great location near everything--walking to shopping for dry goods, meats, fruits, vegetables, bakery items, a couple of lavanderias (laundry), tons of great, reasonable locals-driven restaurants (not the touristy ones on the perimeter of the piazza, however!). There are many tiny streets that run off the Campo in every direction, towards and away from the Tiber River. Maybe a block or two away from the market might be a perfect place to make your air-conditioned base--you're gonna need the A/C!
Enjoy your planning!
Make sure you have A/C! Summer in Roma is a beast!
You might look at SabbaticalHome.com for long-term rentals. Trastevere, Testaccio, and Prati are all good. We live in Parioli and loved it. Good markets, few tourists; a real Roman experience.
I see I mistyped. The website is www.SabbaticalHomes.com.
You also might want to consider home exchange for that length of time. We have done this for a long as 9 weeks and have had wonderful experiences living in a home, in a real neighborhood, and getting to know a place well! We use homeexchange.com and have done 13 exchanges over 10 years.
