My husband, daughter (who will be 11 months) and myself are travelling to Rome at the end of April start of May for 10 days. We are planning on going to Naples and Pompeii for a day trip but wondering what some others found good day trips from Rome, maybe something unique or wine related.
How about Orvieto? Easy to do in a day, and it is unique! And beautiful!
Travel in the other direction to: Florence. You can do Venice but it will be a very long day with the 11 month old. 4.5 hours (one way) via the rails. If you leave early you can be back in Rome by 22:00 hours.
Sure, Florence is do-able, but a lot to pack in as a day trip from Rome, especially with an 11-month old, I'd think. (We recently traveled with our 5-year-old and know how fatigue can set in.) If you're up for that kind of a schedule, why not consider Siena as a day trip, too?
While in Rome, go out to Via Appia (Appian Way) which is one of the ancient Roman Roads. It is reachable by metro then bus. Instructions on getting there are in RS "Europe thru the BD". It is rustic and a shady walk-- wonderful for picnics and relaxation
Naples as a day trip is barely doable
There are 2 national parks, each about 2 hrs from Rome
(Gran Sasso and Abruzzi)
