Milan is a reasonable distance. The train is most convenient to Venice. Or you may decide to fly into Milan, then to Venice, and then to Rome and maybe home from Rome.

Aha! Thanks for the info..sounds like I have some thinking to do. I am meeting family in Rome.. Everyone converging tuesday. Vatican wednesday. I'd planned on leaving Thursday but no flight available, so either have to stay til friday or go to another city. Hoping to stay in Rome longer. Just needing options and not familiar with Italy.

Christina, can you fly "open jaw", perhaps into Milan and then take the trains to Venice, maybe Florence on your way to Rome and then fly out of Rome. Open-jaw can sometimes be tricky to book online so call the airlines directly.

actually i am flying standby as my husband is a captain for a us carrier...its hard to tell when and where i can get a free seat! i try to be flexible...but this time i have made hotel reservations and a wednesday vatican tour reservation...so really trying to narrow it down. definitely need to be in rome tuesday morning...just not sure how to get there and back! need options. i have found trains to be pricey unless booked early, and although i can fly free, getting to airports and the time needed is hard.

We fly standby as well and had to take an extra day in Rome last year as could not get on flight on a Saturday. Can you buy an ID90? We have done that in US but not sure if that works on international flights. You could also look into other cities in Europe your carrier goes to and maybe get a cheap flight say Easyjet and fly from Rome to that city once you have checked to see if there are seats available.

I can list myself on two airlines. And I usually buy a ticket on another carrier as backup. So far no thur flight and Friday ok. But then bad on weekends. I will look into another city as backup to fly out on!
