Rome>Florence>Venice with a 5 year old

Hello,

My family and I plan on doing the Rome, Florence, Venice loop in November. My wife and I have traveled mostly in Central and South America but never in Europe. It will be my wife, me, and my 5 year old son on this trip. I have read plenty of blogs and forums regarding kids and I don't really have any concerns regarding the travel; he is a great traveler. I'm looking for ideas to keep him engaged during our stay. Anyone have any suggestions on things to do, places to stay or visit, or any other experiences for kids? We plan to take things slow and not cram a lot in, we definitely don't want this to be stressful for any of us.

Be sure to look at the PBS videos called "Traveling With Kids." You can view them on YouTube or on iTunes. They have done shows on Rome and Florence and I think they will give you some great ideas! They are actually very good even if you were not traveling with kids.

We were in Rome with our somewhat older kids 12 and 14 last year. I think your son will love the colosseum....we also went out to parco aqueducto which was an easy subway ride to get some green space and a place to run around after doing lots of city stuff. They also liked the catacombs, not really scary in rome not sure if he would be afraid of those or not. Too many museums and art was sometimes an issue. They liked going to markets and were happy with a few euros to pick out different treats that looked interesting. Climbing tall things was enjoyable for them so we went up the dome at ST Peters which in November sunset was a great time for minimal lines and a cool sunset view. For my younger son high speed trains were always a novelty so if you can book one on your travels around he might like that. And of course there are dozens of varieties of gelato to try.
