My husband and I will be traveling in Italy over the Christmas holidays and are looking for places to stay. Any suggestions?

Rome: Hotel Smeraldo

Florence: Hotel David

Venice: Ca' Angeli

Check them all out on Tripadvisor. We could not have been more pleased with any of them.

Just get Rick's book, choose a few in each place, look them up on trip advisor and book. That's what I did and it worked well for me.

In Rome, we stayed at Casa Di' Santa Brigida which was beautiful, meticulous, peaceful, spacious with private bath and perfectly located for walking all over Rome. In Florence, we stayed at Residenza Il Villino which was very "tuscan" in its decor, spacious with private bath, and Sergio was so friendly and helpful. Beautiful courtyard and an excellent breakfast. In Assisi, we stayed at Hotel Berti which was small, charming and a perfect compliment to a medieval village. Also has a very sweet courtyard and an filling breakfast. Franco was very nice and made perfect capuccinos.

Stayed at Ca' Centopietre in Venice in May and thought it was terrific. Check the reviews on Tripadvisor. It was in a great location in Dorsoduro just a short walk from the Accademia Bridge (and vaporetto stop). And the owner was terrific. I would definitely recommend it.

If you don't mind stairs try Fontans Hotel. It was very reasonable with an ample continental breakfast with rolls fresh baked on site in the am. (the smell can make one drool.) The location was fantastic too. 5 minute from St. Mark's and a fairly straight shot walk and about 2 min (about a 1block distance in a normal city)from the san Zaccaria vaporetto and Alilaguna boat stops -50yrds down from the San Mark's stop. Diego at the reception speaks great English and is charming. Good recomendations on local restaurants too. Quiet even though it's on a very small square.
