Rome Florence Itinerary finalized...critique/suggestions? Museum ticket question

Thank you so much to those who have answered my questions thus far! We've just planned this 13 day trip to Italy quite last minute.

I've purchased my Accademia tickets already. I'm about to reserve Uffizzi Gallery, the palace and Boboli gardens also. For other museums in Florence, can you just purchase at the entrance? Is there an app you can get to purchase tickets on and use?

I shared my rough itinerary but neglected to include some details. I realize it's going to be hot the next 2 weeks and want to allow time to just roam and enjoy.

Tuesday July 6 arrive in Rome 7:15. We are accustomed to long flights nearly monthly and were able to get lay flat seats so I expect to arrive fully rested. I paid for the hotel the night before so we can check in, rest a bit and head out.

Planning light day. RS Heart of Rome walk?
Evening is a private 3 hour Twilight Trastavere Food tour with Eating Europe

Wednesday July 7
We have a 3 hour private tour of Vatican City 10-1
Those are our only "plans" for that day. I'm assuming we will want to linger longer? Is there a nice walk to do in proximity to the Vatican?

Thursday July 8 This is a long day. I appreciate the feedback I received in a previous post. I've actually done this day tour many years ago with this company.
Train to Naples arrive 8:15am. We will have a private driver waiting for us.
He is taking us to Pompeii where there is a wonderful guide meeting us.
Then our driver is taking us for an Amalfi Coast drive..lunch..a little shopping, then back to Naples train. We get back to Rome at 8pm. Goodnight! LOL
We are doing this day because it's something my husband, who's never been to Italy, really wants to do, and I've used this wonderful tour driver and the Pompeii guide in the past. 15 and 12 years ago!

Friday July 9 We have a 3 hour private tour of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. 10-1
No other "plans" for that day

Saturday July 10 Rome. Free unplanned day

Sunday July 11
Train to Florence. Arrive 10:30am. We plan to bring bags to hotel and wander for the afternoon.
We do have tickets for the Accademia at 5pm. We are really going just to see the David. I imagine we'll be there no longer than an hour.
Happy hour at our hotel and dinner somewhere

Monday July 12 Private wine tour of Chianti Classico region. This is a full day with some wineries, lunch and I think Greve

Tuesday July 13 Prive wine tour of Brunello Montalcino region. 2 wineries and 2 towns

Both of the above are full day tours.

Wednesday July 14, Thursday July 15, Friday July 16 We plan to be in Florence.

I'd like to dedicate a good amount of time to Uffizi Gallery, Pitti Palace and the Boboli gardens..and anything else we wish to see.
MUST get to 4 Leoni for dinner one night!! I've been dreaming of their pear ravioli for the last 13 years

Saturday July 17 we take the train back to Rome, sleep in Rome and fly home Sunday.
We will either stay in Florence longer in the day on Saturday, get our Covid test at the train station then take train back to Rome, OR take a morning train to Rome and spend time in Rome that afternoon. We will see what we feel like.

I don't feel like this is a jam packed schedule. There's a lot of time in our days to go where we might. I neglected to leave out the scheduled tours in Rome are only a few hours with no other plans those days.

Taking into account we will definitely like to sit at cafes and people watch etc, it seems doable.

Other than the three full day private tours, does anything else look over the top?

Right now I'm just wondering if you can buy tickets at the window for other museums? or do I have to buy everything online? Is the Firenze card worth it? Still available?

Thank you kindly again.

I also have RS Rome and Florence books. I always use his walks when I travel. They are the best! My mom and I loved all of them in Paris!

Can’t answer your ticket question since I’m buying mine all online, but would you share the name of the driver taking you from Naples to Pompeii and the Amalfi coast? We’re looking for someone to take us from Naples to Pompeii then back to Naples for pizza and the archeological museum.

Have a fantastic trip and I hope you will fill us in on how it goes!

@travelisfun We are using Sorrento Limo! They are wonderful!

I used them in 2006 and 2009. We had delightful days. I don’t know if they still use the same guide for Pompeii but they arranged a private guide to meet us at Pompeii and she made history come alive!!

They are very responsive via email and very prompt and reliable.

Julie, the Firenze card is not active for any museums in Florence right now:
http://firenzecard.it/en

"....in order to allow the completion of the reopening plan of the participating museums and sites, and the Firenzecard cannot be used for access to the museums."

Right now I'm just wondering if you can buy tickets at the window for
other museums?

What museums do you want to see? And are you aware of which days/hours they are/are not open, and their individual booking requirements? This is a good starting point for some of them:

I would imagine that some of the smaller ones will have walk-ups available. Florence is great!!!! :O)

The Firenze Card is not available now and I haven't seen anything like an app for pre-booked tickets in my research.
I do know that Duomo Museum/Baptistery, Medici Chapels, Galileo Museums (off top of my head) all require a pre-booked timed entry now. Whether that means no walk ups available at all I couldn't say. You will need to go to the museum's website to book those tickets. Those are just the minor museums I have looked up for our own trip- there may be others that require timed entry now.

Itinerary looks fine, glad to see you left some unplanned days.

Be sure to check open/closed times on the websites- don't rely on info in RS books at this time

Julie, a comment on your Pompeii/Amafli day trip? I know there were prior comments about what a LONG day on the road that one would be? That you are taking a fast train to Naples from Rome - and starting your tour from there - cuts a nice slice of time off the tours that do the entire thing by road. Yep, those are looking at 7 hours or more of road time so you made a good decision to cover the Rome> Naples stretch and back by rail! 👍

If you have the time/energy left on Day 9, otherwise on Day 10, a 3-in-1 sight just down the road from the Colosseum and Forum/Palatine Hill is the Basilica di San Clemente al Laterano. It’s an 11th Century church with a surprising exterior setting, a splendid interior, and then a staircase leading to the real surprises underneath. First, you reach the church below the church, the 1st Century church upon which the “modern,” church was built. There’s also the crypt of St. Cyril, who invented the Cyrillic alphabet now used by Russians, Bulgarians, and others. Further below, it’s Ancient Rome, like the Forum you’ll have been to, but in a different setting. It includes a pagan Mithraic temple, and also remains of a house of a well-to-do Roman, complete with running water. This could still take less than the maximum of one hour you’re planning for David in Florence, but time well-spent.

For other museums in Florence, you can purchase your ticket at the door. It’s the Uffizi that you need to purchase tickets for before leaving home. It’s nice to have one for Accademia too since you always wait in line there. I normally buy tickets on the museum’s website.
While in Rome, make sure you visit the Piazza del Popolo, Rome’s oldest square, it’s breathtaking. I also highly recommend touring the Trastevere neighborhood. The next time I visit that’s where I’m sleeping. Another highlight is seeing the Colosseum at night, it’s magical.
I like the idea of you taking Rick Steves’ self-guided walks, that’s what I do. I would not leave without taking all of them so you don’t miss a thing. You have planned a fantastic trip, have a wonderful time Julie.

We are really going just to see the David

Well, while you are there you could take a quick look also at the other 4 works by Michelangelo on display.

You cannot simply walk up and buy a ticket to the Accademia on a weekend these days. You must pre-book. This is true of a great many museums, not just in Italy. You really need to check each museum's website to see its current policy--which could change before you arrive (for better or for worse).

@acraven Thank you. Yes, I’m very much aware of this fact. :) I’ve pre purchased and reserved my entry time.
