Rome, Florence and Milan

Hi all!!
I am new to this forum and looking for some help
Three of us are landing in Rome around 11:30 am on Tuesday and spend two nights in Rome, then we have next 2 nights Airbnb in Florence and the last day in Milan. Early morning next day we will catch a flight back.
Till now I have planned following reading various blogs and forums on Internet
Day 1(Tuesday):
After landing in Rome around 11:30, check in to Airbnb(1330) , have lunchand then catch a train to Colosseum and then walk to Forum, Capitolline Hill, Piazza del Papollo, Spanish steps, Tivori Fountain around 2200, have dinner and head back.
Day2: early morning 7am at St. Peters Basilica, dome climb, and then reserved an online ticket at 9am for Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel . Out from there somewhere around 1230, then lunch and take a taxi/ train( whichever cheaper) to Casel goldof and in the evening head back home.
Day 3: Leave Rome for Florence .

I need help for how to do this travel train or rent a car and how to plan my 2 day stay there. Visiting Tuscany village is a priority but doing that by train or car?

Assuming the op is not going to visit a casello, a toll booth, I guess it's

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castel_Gandolfo Strange choice for such an hurried trip.

Incidentally it's Trevi Fountain, not Tivori.

Trains are cheaper than cabs, you have to pay either the driver's return journey or the time he spends waiting for you.

You don't have time to drive to Florence, take either a trenitalia.com or an italotreno.it high speed train from Rome.
There are villages that can be reached by local train from Florence on the way to Siena, Certaldo was recently mentioned on a recent thread on tripadvisor. Otherwise you could stay on the tourists' path and drive or take a bus to San Gimignano. It's difficult without knowing why you are interested in visiting rural Tuscany.

Thanks for the reply and sorry for misspelling
Castel Gandolfo and Trevi Fountain
@darioalb I chose this as I have more than half a day left and some blogs recommended this. Also I felt kinda nice to get away from crowd. I'll be glad if you have any other suggestions for me. Regarding taxi, I am using rome2rio app and it didn't give any such info on return fees, although this app says it's cheaper to take a cab. So I appreciate your advice there.

Regarding Tuscany, my main focus is to drive ( without entering ZTL) to a couple of villages and enjoy wine tasting and drive back. I am think of Florence to Chianti to castellina to Florence. But I still have to figure out to rent a car outside ZTL region and to check if all this route is ZTL free

I think that your day is too rushed to commit to an afternoon trip outside the city to Castel Gandolfo. Just seeing the Papal portrait museum is definitely not worth a trip, in my experience. The garden visit may be available only on Saturday. If you see what looks like a (new) chance to view the actual Papal Apartment, then be quite certain that that's what you're getting.

I just thought that I will have a reasonable amount of time (4-5hrs)even if I extend my stay at Museums by couple of hours and I don't know pictures of Castel Gandolfo seemed nice. What do u suggest?

You better check when the St Peter's dome climb opens. The info I find shows 8AM. To climb the dome and get to the Museum entry by 9AM, would require the speed of an Olympic sprinter and endurance of a marathoner..

You might have a better experience to do the Museum tour and then do the dome, and skip the trip to Castel Gandolfo

Also getting to your lodging 2 hours after landing is somewhere on the far side of extremely optimistic. Or are you arriving Rome from another Euro country? That might be the only way to make the 2 hour time frame is to not have to go through passport control etc

From what I checked and read, St. Peters Basilica opens at 7am and I will be arriving from Ibiza to Rome. But I see your point.

You are correct-- The Basilica opens at 7AM------ what I see is that the Dome climb does not open until 8AM. Please double check, but I am pretty sure that is what I saw.

The museum entry is at least a half mile walk from the Basilica and at that time of day you will be heading "upstream"

Also, it appears your day for the dome climb is a Wednesday, which is the usual day for the Papal audience in the Square in front of St Peters. You may want to research if the dome climb has regular hours in the morning.

If nothing else you will have thousands of extra people to navigate around to get from the Basilica to the museum.
Good Luck

@joe..You are right about the Wednesday morning Mass...I'll take your suggestion and omit Castel Gandolfo, visit Vatican first and Basilica second..

Thanks

And if you are lucky, you will not get drenched by the summer thunderstorm that made my visit up the dome a "special treat"

It was warm so I dried out fairly quickly

Do enjoy Rome and the rest of Italy

joe

PS I think you have made a wise decision; sometimes less is more ( fewer destinations, but a better experience where you do go)
