Rome Fiumicino to Assisi Round Trip by Train

I arrived at Rome FCO T3 on Saturday, 14 April at 14:25. I would like to take the train round-trip to Assisi, returning to Rome on 16 April and then stay in Rome. I am trying to figure out the Italian train system. Is it necessary to make reservations or should I buy from the automated ticket machines listed in RS's book?

Thanks for the in-depth train info. However, I did see a fare total of 25 euro from Fiumicino Aeroporto to Roma Termini to Foligno to Assisi. You're right, I'll will need two one-way tickets as I'm returning to Roma Termini from Assisi.

Just relooked and realized the first part of the trip from Fiumincino Aeroport to Roma Termini was 14 euro. That's high, right?

. . . or, after doing more research, do I buy from the automated ticket machines at FCO to get to Termini and have reservations from Termini round trip to Assisi?

You can buy your full round trip ticket at the Trenitalia train station in front of terminal 3 at Fiumicino. I'm not sure if there is a ticket machine there. The train journey will take just over 3 hours and there will be 2-3 train changes and a bus to get to Assisi. The fare for a one-way trip is could be as low as 23E with the mini-fare but will be higher without it. I can see a 9E mini-fare on the 14th for the intercity train from Rome Termini to Foligno. A couple of notes. 1) of the 3 trains that you will be on, 2 are Regionale-class trains and 1 is an Intercity-class train. You need seat reservations on the Intercity train. This comes with the ticket purchase. For the Regionale-class train, seat reservations are not permitted. It's like a bus - you get on and find your seat. If no seat, you can stand. 2) For the Intercity train, you will receive a reservation for a specific train with a specific time. You must take this specific train with your ticket. The Regionale trains have no such requirement. 3) There is no train station in the Assisi hilltown itself. It's in a nearby town but the train station does say Assisi. From the train station, you can take a bus to the hilltown. You can buy the bus ticket at the small bookstore adjoining the train station. 4) You will most likely need two one-way tickets if you buy online as you are not returning to the airport. One ticket will be Fiumicino Aeroporto/Assisi and the second ticket will be Assisi/Rome Termini.

Joan, as a person who regularly posts Trenitalia train solutions, I was very curious about how the new Trenitalia format works. I just purchased a ticket from Assisi to Rome Termini for April 16. I purchased the ticket for $15.10 (11E) and paid for it via Paypal. I was able to get a 9E mini-fare on the 8:33am run on the Eurostar high-speed from Foligno to Rome Termini. Other runs during the morning hours do not have the special 9E fare. Instead, you will pay 14E or 22E for that part of the journey. For further information, Trenitalia sent me the tickets in an email within seconds of my purchase. You get one ticket for each train that you will be on (total 2). I am able to print them out. Each ticket is actually an 8-1/2" x 11" piece of paper with the ticket information printed on it. Also on each ticket, there is a PNR number and an internet icon. This is the number that makes the ticket valid. The conductor has a PDA that will scan the internet icon that will validate your ticket. We've used these before and they work just fine. No issues.

Joan, the 14E ticket from FCO to Rome Termini is indeed 14E. It's a rare circumstance in Italy where the 2nd class fare has been raised to the 1st class fare. The Leonardo Express is rated as a 1st class only train. It's one of those supply and demand things. They have it and you need it.

Joan Are you arriving in Rome directly from the US? If so, the FCO to Termini, the multiple train changes and bus seem rather daunting to accomplish on your first day in Italy. I would stay in Rome the first night or stay at the first change if the town is worth it. This is too much for one day IMHO. Bobbie

Thanks for the comments, Bobbi. I'm not arriving from the USA on the same day. I'm flying into Rome on a 2-hour flight from Prague.
