Rome Fiumicino airport “best European airport” for sixth year in a row

This is slightly older news, but I didn’t find a thread about it when the news came out in March. FCO has once again won somebody’s award for best airport in Europe. I just wanted to describe my experiences, which confirm this in spades, especially after last year’s airport chaos around the world.

I’ve been through FCO three times this month. As the article says, they have upgraded their security scanners so you don’t need to strip down and take your luggage apart. Leave all your electronics and liquids in your carry-on luggage. Bring a full water bottle. No stress.

Literally, all three times I stepped off my bus or shuttle at the sidewalk outside the terminals. Strolled inside, went straight to security, scanned my boarding pass from my phone, walked through the security line without even stopping. Walked up to the security scanner, dumped my luggage, intact, into the bins. Walked through the human scanner, collected my luggage, stopped at a bathroom, walked to the gate through an extensive shopping mall. 15 minutes. You read that right. 15 minutes from sidewalk to boarding gate. 3 times in a row.

Went through Frankfurt another day, the same exercise from city transit to boarding gate took 1.5 hours. At the Austin TX airport, it was about 30 minutes with TSA pre-check and not pulling stuff out. Longer for those without Pre-Check.

Plus the Rome airport has good food, good signage and lots of clean bathrooms. I highly recommend it for a departure airport from Italy. Won’t help you get to Italy, going through most any other airport, but it makes departure a breeze.

A side note, I had to drive my car to the airport the last trip due to connection issues for when I returned. I am now fully over my fear of driving to the Rome airport from Abruzzo, it was a piece of cake and the extended-stay offsite parking was efficient and reasonably priced.

I don’t have a question, just a report from the field. Hope those of you traveling through Rome have equally good experiences.

Nelly, do you know if they have the security scanners for all terminals? I'll be flying from FCO direct to Calgary via WestJet later this month. Maybe we don't have to arrive 3 hours early as planned. I do have some WJ lounge passes I have to use up before June though, so maybe it just means sailing through security and extra time in the lounge.

This article from Feb 2023 says the new scanners are currently being installed in Terminal 3 and will be operational before the end of this year. I would think it would be sooner but no one wants to commit to a date 🤪. But I think it’s unlikely you’ll see it in April.

That WestJet flight is wonderful, on 787s and nonstop to Rome. I’m urging all my friends in Calgary to come see me while that flight is operating.

Oh and fyi for Americans: “Be advised that flights to the USA and Israel are excluded and will be subject to specific screening procedures.” I guess the TSA isn’t convinced about these scanners yet. So fly through Toronto or Calgary! Or take an intra-European flight from Terminal 1 and on home from someplace else in Europe.

Nelly, we will be leaving from Rome airport in about a month, carry-on luggage only. Did you ever have to show your passport to a human before you got to the gate for your departing flight? Thx so much for sharing this!

Pat, no. With carry-on, you do not show your passport to anyone until you are boarding. Here is the Rome airport’s official guide to check-in, which states that. That was also my experience. It seems to me that someone thought through all the steps and put each step in the best place to be effective and to reduce delays. I think they used to call that “time and motion studies”. I think they got it right.

It sounds very efficient!
We can only hope other airports around the world improve their standards too.

I work in the building where TSA Oakland (OAK) is headquartered. They occupy one floor below our offices. Those people (not all but some of them I know) are arrogant bureaucrats and tend to be unpleasant even when I share a ride up the elevators with them. They actually think they are real cops. I don’t know what having a uniform and a US Government badge does to people’s ego. There is no way they are going to accept any loss of power and control over travelers..

Someone needs to convince the TSA is was their idea in the first place 🤪. Or let them “school” others how to do it even better. But Canada isn’t a shining example of how to run airports and security these days either…piano piano

Nelly, thx so much. My husband is an anxious traveler, so this may save us from having to be at the airport four hours early. ( I know- no comment 😉.)
