Rome FCO transport

Going to Italy soon. Never been. How does one get from the airport to city center besides taxis (don't trust 'em). Probably staying at a convent so no shuttle service available. Is there a trian? Should I try to stay near the train station? Thanks to all!

Hi Holly,

Trains go from FCO to Roma Termini (the main train station) very frequently. I am not sure how much it costs, because I used a Eurail pass, but I am sure someone else here will know that. It takes about 30 minutes if I remember correctly. Once you get to the train station, you can use the subway to get closer to your hotel/convent. Rome has two subway lines, and they intersect at the Termini Station. It covers a lot of central Rome, but not all of it, so you might have to walk a bit to your hotel/convent. I don't know if there are convents near the train station, but there are plenty of hostels nearby - I stayed at the Beehive, which is a hostel/hotel, and it was great.

Hope that helps, enjoy your trip!

That does help. Thanks. One more question about hostels. Can you leave your stuff there if you will be around a few days? I have heard that some places require you to lug your stuff with you. Is it secure? I generally trust other travelors, but ya' never know for sure.

Hi Holly, The train you want when you get off the train is the "Leonardo Express" which will take you to the center of Rome. I think the cost was 11 Euro for the 30 min. trip. My advise to you is to make sure you are getting on the right train since it comes into the station along with many other trains that go to other locations in Rome. We were so excited to have landed and was caught up in the excitement, that we jumped on the wrong train and 45 min. later realized this was taking way too long and found out we were on the wrong train...learned a quick lesson and always asked from that point on. Never had a problem train traveling after that. Really quite easy and ashamed that it happened at all.

Holly,

about leaving your stuff in hostels. A lot of people staying in hostels believe that they are safe and they actually leave their bags inside the rooms, but I never do that. All the hostels I've stayed in so far had lockers inside the room or in a common area. That's where I always leave my bags. Make sure you bring your own pad lock.
