Rome FCO to Siena

We will be arriving after an overnight flight and need to get to Siena. We have been to Rome several times and have always taken trains to our destinations but it looks like taking the bus would involve fewer connections as well as take you right into cenTral Siena. Has anyone done this recently and would you recommend it or should we just pick up our rental car at the airport rather than waiting until after our weekend in Siena?

Driving to Siena would be just outside my zone of comfort for driving after an overnight trip, so I'd take the bus, get a nice nap in.

Take the train to Roma Tibertina, walk over to the bus station and buy your tickets. Buses every two hours take under three, stop twice for restroom breaks; right to the center of town. Have your car arranged at the Siena train station when you leave.

There are different buses --- ours was a Flixbus and it had a toilet on board so did not stop for breaks. It took us to the train station, not to the center of town, but there are escalators going up the hill and the walk to the center is less than 30 minutes. Or you could take a taxi from the Siena train station. The Flixbus was very comfortable and their app is a good thing to have. Be sure to get to Tiburtina station early enough to find the bus area --- it's not really visible from the metro exit and even google maps seemed confused.

Buy your ticket using the FlixBus app and you’ll get the least expensive price. Take the train from FCO to Tiburtina Station (48 minutes, €8) where you can catch the bus. If you’re staying in Siena for a weekend, you risk entry the ZTL and having to find and pay for parking. Relax after your long flight. As Greyhound used to day “Take the bus and leave the driving to us.”

I also took a bus directly from FCO to Siena (main gate, not train station). When I did it, 2015, there were two a day. The one I took was at 14:00. Even though I did have to wait around the airport a couple hours, when you figured in the time and cost of getting to central Rome and then either train or bus from there, it was faster and cheaper. Depends on what time the bus runs and what time you land.
