We have a tour ending on a Sunday and we are flying back to the States on Tuesday. Since so many Rome venues are closed on Sunday and Monday, we were contemplating a day trip or maybe even an overnight-er. Do any of you know if a day trip out of Rome is feasible? Train or car? Any good destinations? Appreciate any ideas.
Clif,
What cities have (or will) you see on your tour?
You could go to Ostia Antica, Tivoli or Orvieto from Rome easily via train.
This is the website for train schedules: http://www.trenitalia.com
Are you in Italy now?
What time is your flight departing on Tuesday?
Priscilla and Kent...Our tour ends in Rome after seeing Venice and Florence. Our trip is in March, 2015. We depart Rome around 11:50 am on Tuesday.
I looked at Naples but sounds a little too populated. Would love some back road Italy.
Clif,
What time does your tour end on Sunday?
I assume you will want to return to Rome for your last night before departure, correct?
Tour ends after breakfast so we have all day on Sunday and all day on Monday probably returning to Rome later in the day on Monday. Don't know if it will be a sleepover or just out and back on Sunday and then out and back on Monday.
You will want to sleep in the Rome area Monday night, with your Tuesday morning flight.
I thought of Ostia Antica, but just double-checked and found that it too is closed on Mondays. Orvieto would be a reasonable day trip.
Oops! cross out Ostia Antica -- closed on Monday...
How many days will you be in Rome during your tour?
You may just want to spend the rest of your day and a half exploring Rome (depending on how you feel after your tour.)
If you want to visit Orvieto, it's an easy train ride that will take about 1 Hr. 15 minutes from Roma Termini.
You could also ask for recommendations from your tour guide.
I'm sure others will chime in & give you some suggestions.
Safe travels!
The only site closed on Sunday is the Vatican museums. There are several museums closed on Mondays but most of the sites are still open. If you haven't visited the colosseum, forum, palatine hill, pantheon, the palazzo valentini, baths of caracalla......(the list goes on and on) this would be the perfect time to visit.

Clif, Orvieto would be a great choice for an overnight. Very old small hill town, at least the older part at the top of the funicular from the train station. Lots to do there, including underground sites. Gorgeous Duomo facade with Signorelli Chapel inside. Good food, wine and crafts. Very different from Rome, Florence and Venice. Be sure to wander around in the evening, when things are slow and mostly closed. I recommend Hotel Virgilio where I stayed, comfortable, friendly, inexpensive and right on the Piazza del Duomo. my room had a view of the side of the Duomo and its facade.
You could go to Frascati or Castelgandolfo for a daytrip from Rome. They are cities in the hills around Rome, great views and strolling, great food, good way to de-stress.
Thank you all for taking the time to give us some great ideas. We will check them out and decide if a day trip will work for us.
Thanks again.
